2023 - 2024. Season

Postby 5 stand » Sat Sep 02, 2023 8:18 pm

This morning I didn't hunt my usual opening day dove hunt, Jerry called and didn't have many birds and he has several kids that show up so hopefully they killed mine...

This afternoon Trigger and I hunted another spot... It was hot but the humidity wasn't too bad, we had a good time, felt good to pull the trigger on some feathers...
15 doves...

In our part of the country, they'd have been well done when they hit the ground yesterday afternoon, but Trigger looks more happy than fried.

Trigger looks like he enjoys September morning hunts more so than afternoon hunts. I concur.

I'm sure she does like the mornings better, but sometimes they just don't work out, so we hunt when we can...

Congrats on two sweet dove hunts!!!!
Afraid your trailer hitch step would claim open target rights on my shin bones if I was anywhere near it

I make a effort to warn friends about it, the step sticks out far enough most people notice it and it hasn't been an issue, but people in the Drive-Thru line have run into it twice once at McDonald's and once at braum's,...

Great start! I like that step! Don’t think I would need it for getting into the bed of the truck but I’m not supposed to be jumping out of it anymore with the new hip. But I could also see myself walking right into the thing ha ha

Don't think Blackhawks were around for that one. If he flew utility birds, they were Chinooks or Hueys. If gun ships: C model Hueys or Cobras. And if scouts: OH-6s or 58s. (Suggests an old aeroscout.)

Glad y'all are still in the doves.

He's told me so many stories I've got them all jumbled together...

Don't know if they're still in service, but the Cobras were the latest and greatest gunships in our time.

He got a good laugh out of it when I said that I'd posted he was a Blackhawk pilot... Few more stories today but I'm not going to go into that...

I've shot a lot of money up in the air at that gun club(and sporting Clay tournaments), but I've also met some pretty neat people while doing it...

Yesterday we made our way to the Prairie for our annual Prairie Grouse hunt... Moe and I started hunting this morning and it didn't take long... 45 minutes and we had our three, it sure is nice to get done that early, and then again it isn't... Had a lot of day to kill but we managed...

These three we're in the road graveling I assume, seems to be a lot of birds this year...

Found these out in the field, field studying something I assume there were four in a row about 20 yards apart?

Glad to see you’re having early success! What’s the rain forecast down there? We got a little under a quarter of an inch this morning with more to come.

Like being first back to the boat house: pride turns to envy when you hear the guys that can still be out there shoot. Sweet to have such upland ops within reasonable drive.

Was a nice morning cloudy but no rain, tomorrow will be our first time hunting them in the rain... Don't know what to expect... Moe's getting better he pointed two more on the way back to the truck, after we had our three...

Sweet! Never upland hunted in an active rain but after rains when ground is damp our dogs seem to smell them easier.

Also curious how do they flush and fly? Like sharptails will do so many wing beats then glide wing beats glide wing beats glide, pheasants and Partridge is usually constant wing beats until they glide for a good distance. Well partridge don’t go very far typically they only usually fly less than 100 yards. I have been seeing some more but I have not sent you the locations as it’s been around on harvested crap. We had a bunch in the goose decoys this morning. Didn’t want to shoot them with BBs
