No foolin'. Between the upland hunts apparently within reasonable reach and ducks nearby, I found myself thinking "I want to live where he does." a time or two. OK, maybe three.

I don't think I laid eyes on a gray all morning, had a pair of ducks fly behind me before legal shooting in the dark, think they were mallards only ones I saw beside the one in the picture... Total opposite from the day before, like someone flipped a switch...

Weather forecast Sunday, was for rain here Monday Tuesday and part of Wednesday, no rain in quail country so the plan was to quail hunt... Sunday night when I fed Moe he was limping? Monday morning and today he seems fine? But not going to drive 5 hours to hunt with a lame dog...
Trigger and I will probably hunt ducks Thursday Friday and Saturday? Sunday through Wednesday Moe and I can hunt quail, overall big plan, we'll see...

Had a service call this afternoon and it was close to the gun club... Loaded up the dogs and after the little bit of work that I had to do we stopped by the gun club... The dogs had a big time, I think they miss our usual Wednesday afternoon trips over there?
Trigger smelled a majority of the bushes, and Moe pissed on as many as he could...
The hard life of a hunting dog...

I've got to ready my pairs nesting box. I also need to add more boxes in my yard. I've been meaning to install a purple martin hotel in my yard. I need to move on that pretty soon, as well and check my wood duck boxes.

Might want to fact check me on this, as it was decades ago, but I recall reading that martins are more inclined to dine on dragon flies, aka: mosquito hawks, than mosquitoes.

I wouldn't doubt that. I just like hearing their vocalizations in the early mornings.

We made our way to Quail country this morning...
Moe and I hunted this afternoon...
Moe showed out, he was in beast mode... Pretty proud...
9 Bobwhite Quail...
IMG_20240128_154535323_HDR~2.jpg

Up until today the most we killed in one day was five, usually two or three...
So I usually only carry 10 shells, today I put 10 in my pouch and put three in the gun... Thought was heck that will be plenty, and if I get to shoot 13 that'll be awesome no matter the outcome...
After killing the 7th bird only had two shells to load in the gun (sure was questioning my thinking at the truck)...
But Moe and I finished up strong, sorry about the boasting...

Could be that they're hemmed up in the truck? But I understand...

Yes, and it bugs me... First thing I look at when Moe brings them back... I do notice from time to time on some crossers, but at this stage in the game I'm too greedy and won't let anything fly off... Figure you already know all that, just poking things...

Going to try a different area today, no boots for Moe he will be happy...

Wow what a day! You’ve earned the boast privileges with a day like that with the current state of quail. Hats off to Moe

Forgot to mention, Moe pointed three porcupines today, no physical encounter and we left them unharmed... Two were together first I've seen of that, wonder if it's mating season?
