Cloud cover: mostly cloudy with a bit of fog

Temperature: low 60s

Waterfowl Activity: not much

Waterfowl Responsiveness: very good to the decoys

Hunters: Me and Bill

Malfunctions: none

Dog(s): Remi. she did well on casts

Curses: can't find one

Kudos: finally birds for remi

Birds By Species: 2 Drake pintail. 2 BW teal. 5 Gw teal

It felt so good to shoot and working birds.

Cloud cover: Clear

Waterfowl Activity: Very few moving this morning and those that did were looking for very small water

Waterfowl Responsiveness: N/A

Dog(s): Remi. She doesn't do well with inactivity.

Big NW wind gave us 1-to-2-foot seas with whitecaps. Bill and I had enough of the nonsense and left the blind at 8:30.


We normally run the crabs' traps immediately after the hunt on Sundays, but we decided to go in a warm-up a bit before we fought the wind and waves. We did well on those, with the count at 74.

Blake and I plan to be out in the marsh this weekend after this snowstorm we have on the way. This is going to be interesting.

Thanks for the report and pics.
Got a weekend report from Pass a loutre, and was told that there were a few birds, but so many people, that it made it tough for all. Said there were people already set up in the first 5-6 places they went to before daylight, and finally found a vacant area. Their group only shot 4 teal Saturday, and 1 teal yesterday. Long arse trip for so little, but like I told him, just getting all the way down there and back to Alabama without incident, counts for a lot Used to be that going that far South, there weren't a lot of other hunters, and what few had mud motors, had them on small boats that they kept at their camps. Times have certainly changed.

This was earlier this morning. We have received many more inches after this video was taken and it's still coming down. 1/8 to 1/4 mile vis. I have never seen this much snow down here in my lifetime. Remi loved it. I tried throwing dummies for her but they buried in the snow.

Those are crows. I don't usually mess with those, but we do have a few around.

We ended up with 10 inches or snow today. Something I haven't seen down here in my lifetime.

The wife, daughter, grandson and I took a little walk to the ponds to have a look around. I would have loved to be in a blind today. Travel was out of the question for me, though.

Great video of Remi and pics as well! We got between 8-10" here, and I couldn't believe how dry it was. I've seen snow here on the Al coast maybe 4 other times in my lifetime, but never with snow that you could barely make a snowball with. My wife and neighbors kids waited until today to build a snowman, as the sun slowly melts the snow. Had a nephew say "see unc., Trump's only been in office a day, and he has already solved the climate crisis"

We got 8 or 10 snow flakes today.

I am almost to the point where I would kill for 8-10" of snow.

I think snow when it is really cold is interesting. So dry and fluffy. You can sweep it with a broom.

The down side of it is that it doesn't stay put. Usually have to shovel the driveway two or three times if there is any kind of wind as it keeps drifting.

Records were broken with this event. We were at 4 degrees for the low this morning.

We both had issues with aim this morning. We should have had our limit way earlier that we did as we had plenty of opportunities. We lost a pintail and spoonbill which I made a conscious effort to retrive. I hate loosing a duck.

1/26/2025 Our last hunt of the season

Cloud cover: Overcast with light rain before we left the camp. No rain during hunt

Temperature: 50's

Waterfowl Activity: Not many ducks seen this morning with fewer that wanted to work.

Waterfowl Responsiveness: We shot flybys

Not much shooting this morning and the pre LST road traffic was light. Many in our area opted out of the hunt this morning with many pulling their decoys and boats from the marsh yesterday. GW teal seemed to be the bulk of the straps I saw this morning. Blake, Bill, and I will return to remove everything from the marsh next Saturday...... I'm glad it's over.

I did a quick count for this season. Those scratch hunts, especially the 3 over Thanksgiving are depressing.

Teal Season - 4 hunts with one being a scratch hunt - 15 teal

Big duck - 18 hunts with *7 of those scratch hunts. - 71 ducks


I took a little time and went back to our first hunts on this particular property to now. These are regular season only numbers.

2017/18 -174 25 hunts with 3 being scratch hunts

2018/19- 143 24 hunts

2019/20- 58 23 hunts

2020/21- Hurricane didn't hunt

2021 2022- 86 13 hunts

2022/23 - 115 17 hunts

2023/24 - 15 9 hunts
Started at the second split opening day. Drought

As of now we are going to pick up this place again next year. I pray for no hurricanes, droughts, or levee breaches.

Thanks for taking us along this season Dave! Nice having history to compare year over year in your area, and even if the duck hunting is slow, you've always got crabs and shrimp to fill in the cracks
