2024-2025 Preseason

Joey and I went to the marsh last Saturday to fertilize around the blinds.
The marsh is looking good, hoping the fertilizer will help the grass grow taller around the blinds.
last year at this time the marsh looked good also, before the drought and 105+ temps during the summer.
We saw about 300 teal in the marsh, along with a handful of Spoonies and 6 Mottled ducks.

Things are turning green, for sure. I hope we have are normal summer and a quiet hurricane season.

Do ya use a granular or liquid fertilizer ?
Our brush is mostly growing in water, and feared granular wouldn’t work too well.

A lot of our grass is in water also - we use granular - 13-13-13.

Glad to hear you've got SAV; was thrilled to see ours had rebounded with a vengeance. Have never tried fertilizing the marsh grass but really should give it a shot to try to give our cover a shot in the arm, though it usually takes off just fine on its own.

It particularly recovers tall where it's trampled the season before.

Tomorrow will be July 6,2024 - that will be 10 weeks until Teal Season, or if you prefer 70 days until teal season.
Don't get caught unprepared, check your shells to make sure you have enough. Charge the spinners and give them a test.
Hopefully everyone cleaned their gun after last season, but I know a few fellows that just put their guns in the closet and hope they work the next season.
Hoping and praying all the storms stay away from us.

Now summer's officially here.

Can't help but notice some of the rice is starting to smell sweet, too.

Pretty sure we flushed three teal in the marsh yesterday, so the migration might already be on...or not.

We have not been back in the marsh since April.
We tried to go on June 29, but the water was too high to do what we needed to do.
I think it will be the middle of August before we get back in the marsh, and by then we should have lots and lots of teal

I was not going to post a countdown of remaining time until teal season, BUT I realized that tomorrow July 13, 2024 is only 9 weeks until teal season - that means we are only single digits of weeks away.
I am really, really worried about the upcoming hurricane season, and I know DC is holding his breath also.

We keep having to push our trips to the marsh back knowing water is high and nothing to do but ride around

Tomorrow is August 3 - that is 6 weeks, 42 days until teal season

Praying that all the tropical weather stays away

A report from the commercial fisherman in our area says the water has dropped, and things are looking good.

Our next work day is August 24, but I won't be able to make it, but I will get a report and pass it along.

Good luck to all of you with your preseason prep

Good to hear. High water here most everywhere above the Intracoastal it's been backing up out of. Glad to have gotten most of our nests picked before it got to them.

For all of you that don't look at a calendar - tomorrow is 4 weeks until Teal Season - if you have not started your prep you are behind.
Praying hard that the hurricanes stay away.

Got so cooked opening a chinquapin covered pond the other day that I've been dragging my feet on starting others.

(Cherry Ridge's mudboats might be a traditional way to deliver hunters to a blind, but they suck to work out of. Mid motor isn't just a PIA obstruction but hot as hell to sit, er...stand behind while running. "Stand" because the seats are aluminum and will grill your ass in the sun. Something the old guys employing board seats in theirs apparently understood.)

Rick - my bateau has a metal seat for my passengers, but I put a wooden 2x12 covering the seat to make it more bearable in the heat and cold.

Tomorrow will be Sept 7 - one week until the opening of teal season - reports are we don't have a lot of teal in our area, but I am going anyway.

Woke up to the kind of breeze I wait all summer to enjoy, so good things may be happening as I type...

Heads up gents with SW La interests, increasing confidence of a storm mid-next week along TX coast and, for now, extreme SW La. That of course is subject to change any moment but there's growing consistency in the model runs.

We are screwed - our lease holder usually does not let into our lease for a couple of weeks after a hurricane - our teal season is over before it begins
So much for prep and anticipation

We went to the marsh this past Saturday hoping to fix some walkways to blinds and put out decoys at 2 blinds for the youth weekend on Nov 2 and 3.
the water in our marsh is still too deep, water was 6 inches over the walkways and we could not do that work.
We did not see many ducks, about 40 is all. 30 Gadwall and 10 Teal.
I don't have any youth hunters that can make it this weekend, first time in 9 years
Looks like a front might be coming our way the latter part of next week - hope it brings some ducks.

"Deep" from what, the June storm surge? (Please pardon my badly flawed memory, if you've already addressed that.)

I'm hoping to hear a pump running in our marsh this morning.

The water in our marsh is affected by the amount of water in Calcasieu Lake. With southeast winds and full moons our water level rises. Our hunting area is controlled by a levee, with a control structure to regulate the water. Hurricane Laura damaged the control structure, water will come in with the high tides, but is very slow to get out

I know this is what all of you West Zone hunters have been waiting for - 9 days until opening day - we are now in single digits.
We have a group going this weekend to brush blinds and finish putting out decoys - should have a duck report by Sunday.

Report from youth hunters in JB was they shot 2 boxes each. Ponds full of widgeon grass and such. Maybe you’ll catch some traffic to and fro
