2024 Teal Season

Postby MARSH BEAR » Tue Sep 17, 2024 3:22 pm

Buddy and I went out Friday to pump the water out of the blinds. We got to the marsh about 8:00 am, and went to every blind - we did not see a single teal, or Mottled duck. Very disappointing. The water is high in the marsh, and water all around us.

Date: Saturday, Sept 14, 2024 - opening day of teal season

Hunters: Buddy and I with Abby

Temp: 80 degrees, wind 2 - 10 mph WNW

We were surprised to hear shooting to our south and east early, but nothing much in our area. Finally about 7:30 a lone teal came straight in the decoys - now which one of us would get to shoot first - I won and got the teal. After that we saw a few teal here and there and a few came to visit. Two of our blinds killed 8, but the others were less than that.

Total: 3 - bluewing teal, 1 - greenwing teal

Temp: 80 degrees, wind 5 - 10 mph WNW then N

I little front must have come through, and we saw flight after flight of teal all going south flying high. Not as much shooting around us as yesterday. Again, about 7:30 a single teal came in on my side and I got it. Then it was steady after that, 2s and 3s and some 10 - 12 in a group. Abby did a great job on 3 teal with only broken wings, but she was tired when we finished.

Total: 11 - bluewing teal, 1 - greenwing teal

Glad they finally showed for you, and that's two more green-wings than we've seen, let alone shot.

Nothing wrong with those two hunts! Hoping this full moon does everyone some good with fresh migrators.

Good hunts! We have a lot of green wings still up here. They are a tough little bird and every year they seem to hang out up here longer and longer. There was still some up here last year on the second to last day of our season in December. Feeding in a corn field.

It was hot and muggy, but very few mosquitoes. We heard very few shots in the surrounding marsh, and saw very little in the way of ducks. We hunted until 9:45, we did not shoot.

I guess with more hunters in the marsh we saw more teal than yesterday. We had some good flights buzz the decoys, but poor Buddy could not hit a duck. Abby did great - she picked up 2 ducks twice - she is very efficient - getting smarter in her old age. She had one duck that keep diving on her, and she went totally underwater to get it.

Buddy and I hunted the same blind the lasts 4 days and another group said the wanted to hunt it - so we said OK. We took the blind they hunted yesterday. It was a great day for us, the other group that took our blind killed 4 teal. Abby again picked up 2 ducks at a time twice.
Buddy shot better today.

They’re making you hang around that last day to earn it. Nice work!

Conditions were great, finally a cool front, expecting some new teal to move in - NOT. Larry and I only had 1 opportunity to shoot a lone teal came in to die.

Again another great morning to be in the marsh if you weren't duck hunting. No ducks in our area, we could hear shooting to our south, but nothing close to us. No shots fired by either of us.

We saw a few more teal than the last 2 days, but not much more. Larry had 3 teal come on his side, he shot 3 times and nothing fell. I shot well the few times I had a chance. Abby made a long retrieve on a wounded teal, about all the excitement we had

Total: 4 - bluewing teal

2 of my grandsons hunted in another blind and they also killed 4 - bluewing teal

We heard a few shots to our south early then nothing. Again DNS

Given the nice weather with the decent front conditions for the closing weekend, your results mirror what my own log has long said....the nicer the conditions to be out in the marsh, the poorer the hunts go. Glad you at least had some good ones before that weekend.

Still got some grandkids of age for the youth weekend Nov 2-3?
