Unless something else takes precedence, I usually make a pass to shake a few hands but generally don't stay long. All sounds the same to my tin ear.

Old friend from the Faulks calls lineage that I'd brought along with you sometime is participating I think, and would also just like my son to take some of that in. With the fate of your past outfit, I've been missing my at least 1-2 time a year immersions into Cajun country, where you can feel duck season's presence (or coming) as much or more than anywhere else in the state, and certainly a million times more than here in BR.

I really miss the days when you could step outside and hear a call or two most evenings or stop by a convenience store and find guys giving each other's calls a go in the parking lot. And the seasons when even the old ladies greeted you with "Did you kill?"

Went to the marsh yesterday with the excuse of poisoning lilies that would hide some of our gator baits come September and encountered a significant increase in the number of black-bellies around Neil's blind. Having moved more of them in virtually every marsh we picked this summer had been a bit worrisome, but I feel better now...

Have you noticed them commonly shift one marsh to the other? Or prefer the CR marsh at certain points on calendar?

May well just be paying more attention now that they're such an important part of the bag, but have always found them far fewer in number there in the summer than winter - just not thought it as few as I've seen using CR this summer. But I've not seen as many as expected in the rice to date, either. So maybe my eyesight is going the way of my hearing...

Sure seem to be seeing them in more and more places around BR and surrounding edges of rural land with water features.

Probably interesting to see where all people try to target them come October, from traditional marshes and fields, to neighborhoods??

Historically, a mallard in a subdivision is another bird from the migrator. For these, it's all the same bird, whether you harvest it at CR or puddles at the Walmart parking lot.

Was back in the marsh clearing gator line openings Sunday, when three little ducks zipped past slip-sliding side to side, much more like blue-wings than woodies, and became my first "maybe teal" of the year. Their number struck me as notable, as I'd seen three too-early "maybe teal" while picking eggs in Big John's marsh a year or two ago, followed by three more shortly after while piddling around at nearby Cherry Ridge. Which came to mind when three more "sure as heck looked like teal" passed between Call and I and the rising sun on our morning rice country constitutional. Being silhouetted made their ID uncertain, though the woodies passing a few minutes later where most definitely that. Should three more unidentified little ducks pass in the next few days, they may be stalking, or haunting?, me.

Been a blessing that Call, dark brown coat and all, has held up to summer heat that leaves me wringing wet with sweat well enough that we've been able to continue our morning ag land training and exercise this long - thanks as well to a farmer friend having held his mostly gator-safe crawfish water well past that need. This morning we found those gates open and drop-pipes pulled, so that's over, but we also found the flood canals to his first crop rice stubble filling and flowing to spur growth for a second crop or, more likely. forage for his next crawfish crop. My guess being that he'll just flush, rather than flood, to discourage apple snail production. But even that will provide enough safe dog-cooling water to afford us at least a few more field days there.

And we both can use all of the training and conditioning days we can muster.
