I've only ever hunted or ate quail. So my vote is for quail. Quail it is.

It is hard to choose, for dog work it is either pheasant or Hungarian partridge, for the area that you are hunting, I like prairie chicken. For eating either quail or huns.

Favorite bird to eat is ruffed grouse. Have not had them all, but those little gerbils are the best yet.

For hunting, it isn't the bird so much as the country.

DNR here classifies turkeys as a big game big game species. I disagree but I don't make the rules.

Go to any bird book and they'll be classified as upland birds.

Our DNR is sometimes wrong.

Only things we ha e here are spruce grouse, ruffed grouse and woodcock

Ruffies are by far my favorites, both hunting and eating. Spruce grouse are the stupidest birds in the woods, I've seen 10 shot out of a tree with a slingshot, you just have to start at the bottom and work your way up, so you don't hit live birds with falling dead ones. My grandfather used to catch them with a five foot stick that had a rabbit snare on the end.

The only woodcock I ever shot was jumped off of a puddle in the road. I don't have a dog and they are impossible to find without one

I've never kicked one up without a dog but they are by far the easies to hunt with a dog. They sit there untill you kick em. Makes great practice for the young pups learning to point too.
