I've never kicked one up without a dog but they are by far the easies to hunt with a dog. They sit there untill you kick em. Makes great practice for the young pups learning to point too.

Oh I've had them explode from between my feet and the last thing going through my mind at that moment is trying to shoot them. Usually need a fresh pair of underwear after an encounter with the little bastards

Jarbo, you ever put a box of long grain wild rice in a casserole dish, set pheasant on top, use tooth picks and pin a couple strips of bacon on top of that then dump a can of mushrooms and some cream of mushroom soup on top of all that, them cover with tin foil and bake?
Good stuff and keeps the pheasant moist.

I kinda do that with grouse. Stuff it with wild rice and mushrooms and a little butter, strap some bacon around it then pour cream of mushroom on top of them all

Everything but the bacon I have done, very good. When I do it like that, I soak in water with a shitload of cajun seasoning, it will flavor all the way through phez and quail, and the brine helps keep moisture.
Tonight was grilled with jalapeno and bacon, medium heat, or high as you can get without flaming up. When not overcooked it stays very juicy. I may have jizzed a little during tonights meal.

probably depends on food habits. I've noticed taste difference between rough grouse that I get in oak ridges compared to ones that I get in swamps and pines. Never had a sharp tail though so its just a guess.

I shoot all of mine in either pines or maples. Haven't ate a maple syrup flavored one yet! That would be a dream

I put Maple syrup on damn near everything I eat. Once the bird is done, take it out of the pan and crank the heat up. Throw in some maple syrup and cook it down...pour over everything...success

Quail.
Am going to start raising quail in my garage...
I'll sell birds and eat some myself but the real reason I'm going to raise them is... EGGS!

I live in a town where there are a whole lot of Asians. Odd but true. We have Asian Medical Clinics, Asian Restaurants, Asian Groceries, Acupuncture Clinics, and you name it. Have heard that there is a demand for quail eggs and they'll pay $12/dozen.
CUH CHING!

Them little Coturnick's quail are bigger than normal and their eggs are bigger as well. Getting into the quail-egg market.
I need to come up with an Asian name (alias) to go by when I sell the eggs thru the back-door at the hot-wok. ;)

My favorite is dove. Not many quail around here any more. I have only seen 2 wild ones. One was while dove hunting and the other was in the back yard. It came up to the pen that we used to keep our quail in that we raised.
