hey i'm very new to this forum, as you guys can see I'm a very avid hunter since I scout and decoy starlings in the offseason.Everyone I've talked to says decoys don't work for starlings, but I've found it quite successful.I was wondering if anyone out there has shot them for practice, and for conservation purposes. Please all comments on starling hunting are welcome, thanks Mitch.

I'll be completely honest...I've never heard of hunting starling.

Do you eat them?

Hammy, welcome to WFF

I have shot starlings and found that if you can find a group of them feeding on the ground and shoot them on the ground, you won't kill all of them, some you will miss and they will fly off, some you will only wound and they will hop around and flop around and give you some time to reload while the flock mills around the wounded birds, this is when you can kill the shit out of them. Use 7 1/2 or 8 size shot. Try not to spill your beer from laughing so hard when you successfully kill your first 100 plus with only 4 shots. In a sense you are using wounded birds to decoy the flock and it works really well.

Think back: Four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie.

Welcome!

And yes, I shoot them for practice - as often as I can. Never used decoys though.

would it be illegal to tie and couple starlings to fishing line on a stake for decoys.

Sounds like a fun plan to me.........Then if you shoot your decoys, it won't matter.

I don't think any CO is going to get on you for using live decoys for starlings.
