My dove season is hit or miss depending on if the farmers land I hunt gets his crops out. As of today the corn isn't out, here's to hoping it comes out in the next 4 days.

Mowed my safflower fields and been pumping water into my government enhanced swales for the birds to grab a drink . Fields are building everday. Goin to be shooting the 410 on the opener. Sounds like a few birds have been banded this year. Didn't manage to get any last season. We usually average around 4to6 on any given season for the past 10 years.

I Don't run our dogs out here in September. To afraid of rattle snakes. Some seasons we don't see any and others we'll kill a dozen. I'm to paranoid nowadays back when I used too. The dogs might get alittle beat up from safflower thorns but goat head stickers would mess with them. I mow a big relief area, call it a retreivel zone around the fields. So if a bird gets knocked down anywhere near them you can usually pick them up with out a problem.

I got ya , I asked because I planted safflower one year and felt it was harder on my dogs than I was comfortable with.
And had thought if I ever did it again I would use a flail mower and grind it down hard.
Thanks for the info.

Yeah I mow the crap out of it. First pass just knocks it down. Multiple passes chews it up good and explodes the seed pods. You could always go with sunflower a bit more expensive and can be more of a pain in the ass. Ive had finches clean the heads out prior to dove season. But it is easier on the dogs...... this is one of the small fields of saff.

Had a good opener plenty of doves for the entire crew.
Opening evening my buddy hosted a dove feed.
The Lady's got together and made a number of side dishes and deserts.
It was a nice day all around.
Our newest shooter was my grandson 10 years old it's always cool to see the next generation fall in love with the sport.
The dog work was excellent enhanced by numerous water retrieves by all the dogs.

3" of rain, extreme winds, lighting, and a front that dropped temps 40 deg the night before, had the birds screwed up for the opener. First field was a bust, checked a few others and finally found a wheat field with birds. Taz had a great day with many retrieves, and the rain made some nice water holes to cool off in. A few of our best fields were off limits due to the rain, dirt roads were impassable.

We had a good hunt. About 70 people showed up and I think just about everyone killed a limit, those that didn't wasn't because of a lack of birds. The only downside was that it was about 97* with 75% humidity and not a breath of wind.

I can't believe how fast they are growing , getting them back in the kennel is like trying to grasp a handful of sand.
They are way to much fun.
I have been letting them fetch quail wings and play in a couple inches of water on the warm days.
I have never seen short hairs take to the water so naturally, all though there momma loves the water as well.

Here's my journal entry for the dove opener.

September 1, 2014:
Didn't hunt because the special interests got our season banned. Fuck you HSUS.

Damn I'm jealous of you guys that get to hunt doves.

Was the Vortex worth the trouble or just one more thing in a situation that would have worked well without?

Great looking shoot , I understand you said it wasn't necessary but how did you like the vortex ?
We love mojo's for dove but don't use them on the opener due to the abnormal pressure on the birds.
Have you seen a difference between the opener and later hunts in the past ?

I know we all probably kill alot of first year birds every dove season. So what I'm gonna say won't make much sense. But I swear doves are getting conditioned to those damn spinners. Every year they work less and less. This opener they worked kinda ok for the morning. Had a couple of buddy's come out for the evening that needed to finish up. They hunted some where south of yuba city. Birds seems to dig them bit more that afternoon. The vortex does work well, it catches the birds eye at long distance. I still think though a standard mojo on an extended pole 12 or so feet in the air and another low to the ground is the most effective. Also set them at 90 degree angles. So they can be seen from any where..... just what I've learned over the years.
