How are the tonal qualities of a 2x4?

You just lost all credibility as a call snob.

I was in no way going to spend a lot of money on blanks just to fuck them up. As soon as I get a little better I am going to start using the redwood I found. It has been laying in a shop for about 20 years. Real tight grain on it and absolutely no knots. Surprisingly the barrel sounded pretty good with my J Frame insert in it. I may have to send you one if I get Mine and Rebel's finished so you can see the light too.

I will if I get good at it. But I refuse to waste money now. Don't want a $50+ amboyna burl blank going into the fireplace now do we.

Just giving you a hard time. Just keep messing with it and you'll have your own style in no time. Are exotics expensive in your area? The place where I buy from, sells a turners grab bad or whatever they call it for 20 bucks if I remember right. It usually has different sized chunks that are about right for calls of various types, coco, red heart, bocote, osage ect.

Don't have a local exotic wood supplier so everything has to be ordered. I wish we did have someone close so I could get some different woods but there isn't one as far as I know.

I've been eyeballing a chunk of black canvas micarta online for a while, but just can't bring myself to spend the 30 bucks + shipping for it.

I like to go down there and cruise the isles and quiz the owner. "What's this, what's that, how much is this, would this sound good for a call?" The owner is very knowledgeable and a nice guy to deal with.

Some of the chunks I was looking at cost $300-. I don't think that's gonna happen.

sounds good, but, the calls they have pictured there is nothing exceptional about the tightness of the growth rings, real old growth trees, at least the ones sought after for sound quality, are exceptionally tightly grained. I think they may be a little shady?
