I've turned a few barrels. It's enjoyable. Made a jig to make reed inserts a few months back, just haven't done it. Good luck.

I am going to try and make a Louisiana style insert for it. Start out flat and file it down till it sounds good, hopefully.

I have fun with it. I even bought a cheap cow elk call, threw the plastic barrel away, and turned a better looking one out of cocobolo.
Did you get a tail-less arbor for turning the barrels?

No I am just using what is there. It definitely will be a crude sucker but hopefully it works out.
Its old Delta lathe. Looks like this but an older model.

I'm really interested to see how this goes for you. A friend and I are talking about doing the same thing.

If you are going to get serious, the arbor is worth its weight in gold.
Let me know if you want some pics of what I've got.

Nice Hammer I'd like to see what you turn out! once you make an insert your happy with have a mchine shop make a jig for you. I really enjoy making them and its even better when you make a call that sounds great

I use a lathe about the same size as well but it was custom built by my grandfather many years ago. I had a machine shop make me a 5/8 pin mandrel to turn them on

Duck Hammer. I played the video. About the time the quacking started my dog showed up at heel and started whining.

I think they sound good. I missed all the hullabaloo elsewhere, but if I had need of a duck call, I'd buy one.

And in turn sends all pintails within 50 miles directly to Florida.

Oh no, they aren't bashful about presenting shots in the least. Almost like the story is out in the pintail community.

Well, I got one barrel turned out today. Kinda fucked up the mouth piece and made it too big, but it doesn't look too bad for the first one. Didn't get to attempt an insert, so that will have to wait until next week. Presently I am going to dip the barrel in linseed oil as a finish. On a brighter note I found some awesome grade 1 redwood today to use. Cant wait to see how it turns out.

Check into a product from Hut called "PPP", perfect pen polish. Its a food grade high temp wax that you apply while its spinning, the buff to a shine.

I use the hut friction finish that stuff is great gives a nice shine and durable coating it has wax and shelac better than just a straight wax

Ok, Here is the barrel I turned today. I know that the mouth piece part is way too big and needs to be addressed on the next one. It has been dipped in Linseed oil to help protect it. Let me know what you think.

Nice Hammer!! Get your self a box of turners sand paper with grits from 150 to 600 and it will take those turning marks out and scratches

Scratches came from using too low grit sandpaper.

2x4's turn up pretty nicely don't you think.
