Serious Question

Postby Ducky192 » Wed May 22, 2013 6:29 pm

So I have been picking my brain and I am not sure why this is, so I will ask the source buyers of calls. I don't seem to be selling hardly any is it the look of them I am just curious as I can't change what I don't know and your feed back is appreciated. Thanks guys

I wouldn't doubt your skills as much as the call market itself. There is an endless list of different call makers your competing with.

Its not duck season. Yet.
Sales should pick up then.
Your prices are right.
I will buy a couple this fall, try them, and give a report.
Wait until September.

yeah thats true but they seem to be selling how do you get your name out there, if no one is buying. Just like to hear your ideas on what may persuade you to try a call you haven't tried before. Are my prices reasonable?

The way to get popular is to win the world championship duck calling comp. in Stuttgart.
Go there, set up and compete. Start out at the state level.
It is a popularity contest. Who knows, you might win or....get someone who competes to use your calls.
Sponsor some callers.
Its a gamble.

Postby huntfishnv » Wed May 22, 2013 7:00 pm

I honestly only buy a new call every other year or so and I switch between duck and goose calls and I have a feeling a lot of people are like me in that respect. I'd bet it's probably not your calls as it is such a limited market and you have the bigger names to compete with, I don't know if you already do but going to all the waterfowl shows in your area and just kind of hitting the pavement so to speak is how I'd imagine would gain you a 'hard core' local following which would eventually grow. Maybe have a raffle or something for some of your calls at the local DU banquet, anything to get your name out there.

Most successful small game call companies I see start off as regional and spread from there, best example of a company who I think did that is Pacific Calls.

Maybe you need a pro-staffer in the Northeast!? I attend numerous DU events every year including the one that I Chair. I could help spread the word about/promote your calls at these events. just saying...

I fall in the group of people that have calls that work for me and don't have the cash to reasonably blow on others. If that changes you are at the top of the short list.

Maybe try going to a few local sporting goods stores and see if they would be wiling to shelf a few of your calls. Not everybody looks online when it comes to buying calls.
Also you need to get people to be able to try your calls. I know I'm always really hesitant when getting a call if you've never blown it before.

I bet it really does have a lot to do with it not being duck season. Calls are just like everything else there is a big rush right before season starts.

Shape. Comfortability in shape, size of call/barrel for typical calls, style of calls. Make a lineup(close range or timber, far range or open water, meat syle, mainstreet style, old hen, young hen, cutdown, reelfoot, different species, single reed, double reed, so on) those kinds of things may help as well. Also, as others said, time of year.

Re: Serious Question

Postby assateague » Wed May 22, 2013 10:29 pm

I agree with the season replies. Let it get a little closer. These sorts of things grow exponentially, rather than linearly. One in a blind leads to another guy interested in one. Then two guys introduce it to 6 guys, and 3 of those guys want one. And so on.

I'm sort of an old guy, and I have one duck call that only ever gets used a couple times a year, so I may be talking out of my ass here. But I'd say keep it "traditional". Don't fall into the "I need to sell more, so I need some tribal designs and a Tapout shirt inscribed on each call" trap. That's all there is out there- a bunch of trendy calls, which really aren't any different than each other. You already have a marketing/call theory perspective that is different than most. Give it a little time to work.

i'm with Assa, don't go all gay with it. If you ever pay attention to call classifieds, there are a ton of those toxic calls for sale all the time. May also want to add soem acrylic and more popular woods to the mix as well.

I will probably try out another look to diversify the collection a bit. I keep thinking about the purple heart wood. I had a pool cue of purple heart that I loved...

x2 That was a good looking call. If you could take the exact specs of that call put a 5/8 bore, open up the insert bore almost max'd out and make it into canada call it'd be perfect shape.

Serious question: Why should folks pick your calls out of that litter?

These boards are the only place I've ever seen your calls. And with the exception of this site, which is itself a little known start-up, they're lost in the shuffle of calls being presented by their makers and/or heralded by purchasers. That doesn't mean you should give up on this venue; hang in and maintain a positive presence, and over time, more and more folks will take the trouble to check out your site, a percentage of which will give your calls a shot.

But I think your best shot is to get out among 'em and show folks what you've got in person, rather than hoping they'll pick Bio Calls out of the crowd and look you up.

Don't listen to the "ricks" of the world that'll tell you it's impossible.
Make the highest quality at the lowest price and people WILL notice.

I also suggest making Hedge calls if you don't already.
All the call makers seem to be steering away from that material just as my interest in it came out.

Hedge calls are my preference over ANY other material and have tried a few.
I think hedge is hard on the tools. It plain tears up the chain on a chainsaw with a quickness.

If you need hedge wood...I can find it but it's green and you'll have to dry it and stabilize it etc.
I've heard that it's incredibly stupid to fuck around with a crazy man's head.

Yeah, if he did that, he'd be out showing his calls to folks.

Or he could listen to you and make hedge calls no one knows exist.

When Eli Haydel started, he'd show up most anywhere duck hunters gathered with one of his DR-85s sitting in a glass of water. And when it caught someone's eye, he'd pull it out and show them what the soon-to-be most popular duck call in the world sounded like.

The world didn't just up and decide to beat a path to West Monroe to meet the Robertsons, either. Phil gathered his gumption and calls and got out there and sold them, and himself, face to face. He was remarkably similar to the soft spoken, laid back current, "as seen on TV," version of himself back when he was worried about making enough on his first video to pay for it. But he was out there putting himself and some pretty nice little calls in front of as much of the public as his budget allowed.

First time I can recall paying attention to RNT, if I'd even heard of it previously, there was a young fellow I didn't know from Adam, named Jim Ronquest, on my phone trying to sell me calls to peddle through the camp. I didn't buy, but we developed a friendship that led to his sending me a prototype I liked and used guiding. The relationship that began with that cold call from a fellow doing his damnedest to carve a niche for himself in the waterfowl business has led to my indirectly selling gosh knows how many calls for RNT. And Jim has built an Army of "brothers" like me. Having someone like Ronquest as a spokesman logging countless booth hours visiting with folks, never pushing a sale but always anxious to help someone get a better handle on their calling, has done far more for their sales to hunters than all the contests RNTs have ever won.

It's a given that all of those guys had good products, but I can't help but think that what's made their companies the giants they are has been getting out there and showing hunters what they're selling, instead of waiting for hunters to come to them.
