If you could only pick 4 calls

Postby Richard Federation » Sun Dec 08, 2013 5:28 pm

I am new to waterfowl hunting and could use some advice. If you could choose only 4 duck calls all for under $50 bucks each what would they be and why. In my area we mainly have mallards, teal and wood duck. I just ordered a Zink PH-1 with instructional DVD but before I waste my hard earned money on stuff that may be junk I thought I would run it by all you experts. The same question can be posed on goose calls. As far as I know we only have Canadians in my area.

By the way I am not getting into waterfowl hunting because of the Duck Dynasty show I have been watching them back when they still hunted on the old show. I am starting because my dad who taught me how to hunt fish and do just about anything outdoors used to hunt ducks in CT with grandpa and stopped to start a family (me) And he was never able to get back into it but we have been talking about a lot in the last few years and we decided to start together. He is now 71 with fair to poor health so I am kinda on the fast track if you know what I mean. Any help would truly be appreciated. We have a few decoys rigged up we each have shotguns and an 18 foot boat that I will be camouflaging up soon but no calls other then the PH-1 I ordered last night.
Regards

Rick

Haydel's DR-85. Because Jarbo says so...

My first was a Buck Gardner "Double Nasty". It's a decent call for about $20.

I think you should spend a little more and get a wood RNT short barrel. Awesome call to learn on, and continue to hunt with as you grow. Can often find a used one for just over $50, or a new over for $80.

Just because my lanyard cost an incredibly stupid amount now doesn't mean it always has. ;)

Think more creative, maybe some little hats for them or little dinner coats. You know mix it up a little.

The question: Does he duck hunt or just collect calls? He might not have to quit anything.

The poly echo calls like the Trash Talker, Poly, or diamond wood ones are good too.

After watching countless hours of waterfowl hunting on tv and correct me if I am wrong, is acrylic single reed better for longer distance and a higher pitch as apposed to a double reed that is raspier and have a better sound at a closer range especially if it has a wood barrel?
