If you could only pick 4 calls

What duck call to get? Who makes their own calls? Ask here!

Double reed are generally easier to blow, but single reed has more range. I'd start with a single, because the transition from a double to single can be difficult if you learn in a double.
Acrylic has a sharper tone, but doesn't necessarily mean louder. Wood and poly are generally a little more "ducky"...but the sound doesn't travel like acrylic does. I'm not an expert on this. It's just what I've experienced and read.

To the OP, what is the meaning behind your name?

If I were choosing 4 calls for under $50 each for me, I'd probably cheat and buy 2 calls for under $100 each: an African blackwood MVP and hedge Microhen. If they were for someone in your position, who already has a PH-1, my picks would be:

Haydel DR-85 - because more people have apparently gotten the "just like a duck" sounds most want out of them than any other call ever made, so you're odds of also doing so are pretty dang good.

Haydel's MP-90 whistle - because after trying several (including Wingsetter's trombone), it's my pick of the 6-in-1 whistles.

Duck Commander's wood duck call - as good as any I've used or heard and feels a lot better in hand than Haydel's.

RNT's Quackhead Timber - the easiest to run single reed I'm aware of, and a fine little call once you've got a handle on it.

Cheap decent calls are Buck Gardner. You can go you the store and try them to see what you like. The Canada hammer is probably the easiest to run short reed goose call that I've ever tried and the reed can't really be adjusted so putting it back together after cleaning it or for whatever reason is fairly fool proof. His Brads reactor is a pretty good mallard call and you can find them on sale under $50 at times.
