My opinion. Get the basics down with a affordable call. But do try and make it a good one. I believe alot of bad habits can arise with you learning on a poorly built call. A shitty call will never sound really good. Making it impossible to reach your full potential...... Just a thought.

AR is raspier and louder. La is smoother and closer to a J Frame IMO. I've only got one La cut and it definitely isn't my favorite.

Have had three cutdowns, and my favorite of those just got retired after nearly three seasons of experimentation in the field.

Same old MVP has remained far and away my field favorite after ten or so seasons of every open day use.

It did that it dealt with calls but it also took some turns.

There is not an answer to the high pitch to deeper tone question. It comes down to what you have confidence in and what turns birds in your area. That said it's nice to have both on the lanyard. I love my mvp but something to get down low and raspy next to it is nice for the days they don't like the usual.

RM Customs is a one man operation, Ronald Luann. One of the best around at making a custom call and his customer service is top notch.

Buying used is the best way to go. You can get barely used calls for $50 off of the retail prices. With duck season about to close calls should start hitting the classifieds on other forums and FB.

I find I generally get more reflex response out of high, crisp notes than deep, raspy ones, but the MVP does both well. I do, however, think my scroll insert era DC sounds wicked (the Janis Joplin of Susies), and we've shot ducks that staled on the MVP over it - just doesn't have leverage or versatility the MVP does.
