The end of a LA is cut at a 45, an Arkansas is more rounded. AR takes more air, LA is smoother and closer to a J Frame IMO.

Yes. The Ar is the better of the two all around. I'd wait to and try to find one or you could go on DHC, plenty of them floating around.

Black Monster AR cut. He has a new one, Black River I think, haven't tried it yet but I do really like the AR.

Nuff have you considered you are taking duck call advice from someone who shoots less than 10 ducks a year?

No foolin'. If DH could quit petting his precious collection long enough to actually hunt, he might know the Louisiana cut was developed to toll the smartest of mallards after the Arky nimrods weeded out the dumb ones with inferior Arkansas cuts.

Yes. I've killed less than 100 ducks in my life though, so I don't know anything more about it.

I'm open to info. What makes the LA better?

From my experience with the la vs ar cuts. The la cuts take more air and are raspier than the ar cuts, when compared to the same call cut differently. From my experiences bsods are much easier to run than other brands.

I'm just goofing. Tried three cutdowns (DFB 50-11 cut, BSOD Ark cut and Mondo Ark cut), liked the Mondo best, and carried it for three seasons before pulling it this Winter in favor of giving something else the loop. Experimented with birds quite a bit before season and between splits, but seldom found myself reaching for it when under the gun to produce, and even more seldom found it of special benefit then. Maybe I chose the wrong cutdown or never learned to run it "right," but I just didn't find it as useful as my other calls.

I just want something that is loud and deep. I hunt flooded corn managed areas a few times where there are 9 parties in every 180acre field. Everyone has a loud crisp call and the ducks get wise to that. Quiet calls don't work because the ducks focus on the most noise.
Don't care if it even sounds like a duck. Just want loud and raspy.

Have you tried just changing the way you call? I can get a lot of rasp out off my calls from the way I run it.

I actually have a harder time making it clean. Might be all you need, and is probably worth learning to do even if you end up with a new call...

I can get quiet rasp out of my DC. But when I get on it to try and get loud it gets real high and crisp.

Buy a bunch of each instead of building an ultralight. You'll find something you like eventually!

Sounds a little like my excuse for wanting to know what the flavor of the month was like. Won't every really know until you try it.

This was my 4th season of really trying to duck hunt. Only killed maybe 2 or 3 ducks before that jump shooting beaver ponds while grouse hunting. First year I think I shot 4 ducks. Second I think was like 12ish. Last year was close to 20 and this year I shot 42. Never been hunting with a person that knew how to duck hunt in my life.

The "Illinois cut".
