Just get a matching green Insert. The mondo turned out great after I did that.

Anything is better than green and orange I guess. Ivory would look pretty slick.

The ducks don't care what you call looks like. The best ones I've ever seen or heard were Olts that were covered in black tape. Some guys insisted it made em sound better.

Both ends of this trio are mallard green and ivory, so you know where I stand:
Image

Call on the left is the old DC. Had it made without engraving, because I've too much respect for the birds to want something with that dumb-assed duck skull on it. (Almost didn't buy it at all because of my strong association of "daisy cutter" with war and distaste for treating bird hunting as though it were in anyway related to combat.) Wish, however, I'd had them go ahead and put the scrolling on the insert, because it's slick as snot without.

My favorite color combo was probably that ivory insert in the hedge body of the SB I had:

But the hedge seemed to take a hair of the skreech out of the call, so I'll not be having one made up for it.

It totally matters what the call looks like. Why do you think those toxic staffers don't kill shit.

Damn I always thought those were black and ivory. The Micro is still my favorite of those three.

Seems "mallard green" acrylic can vary, and those are very dark. Have seen a mallard green Lares speck call that was lighter and looked like crap after just a bit of use. Anyway, that's what they are.

As for the spinner bait Microhen, I may have grown too old for it. Ordered that combo on a whim but would now prefer something more conservative. Thought I had a hedge insert and black acrylic body cut to the original Microhen's dimensions ordered, but what showed up was the current smaller bored, longer barreled version. Sounds sweet and can still be transitioned to from the MVP without a thought to air presentation, but it won't cut it for my purposes without the volume potential the bigger bore provides. If the barrel lengths make an appreciable difference, I'm not caller enough to notice, so I'll probably just have the bore opened, rather than passing it on and starting over.

Damnit! Now I have to get a dark green or Ivory insert. I guess matching green would be my first choice.

Is anyone in the market for an ORANGE insert?? I wonder if they would take it on trade?

Who thought that would be a good color anyway?

My original acrylic is a pretty color of blue.

That "boots on" orange and green color combo seems real popular, so you may well find someone up for that trade. Doubt RNT's going to want a used insert on trade but think they'll make you a new one for around $45 and shipping.

Or you could paint it and sell it to Assateague.

Tomkat, Get an orange barrel and a mallard green insert ordered and then sell the orange call complete.
If you're gonna use a SB as your everyday #1 call it might be a good idea to have a nice warm spare in your pocket to pull out when #1 starts sticking or something. I alternate calls like that on cold days.

Will say it again. If you have a call you really love and have confidence in, get two.

2 great ideas!

Acorns makes sense.

Painting one and selling it to Assacheap makes me smile.

Thinking on it, it may be $65 for the insert and $45 for a barrel when they're replacements. Don't really know, just what I've read on the net - and we all know how that goes...

I think mine was $45 for the mondo insert all said and done.

That "spinner bait" is beautiful. Everytime you post it it catches my attention. I've kicked around the idea of trying one out but just never pulled the trigger, probably not a good enough caller to make a difference anyways. Haha. You better hold on to it Rick, its purty.

Better not, I'll probably love it and not want to send it back. But I do like those colors together.
Thanks though.

I guess I should just keep an eye out for a used one.

I agree. The current version puts me in mind of a souped up, snottier New Old Style or maybe a Timbre with more character, but it's not nearly as apt to lock up on you as those if you grab it after running a bigger bored call or thinking it is that. Just won't generate the volume, read: "assertiveness," the more open original Microhen bore will.

I'm not a collector, but it's helped kill a lot of birds for us, which makes it one I may hang onto for one of the grand kids if and when it's retired. (Oldest boy that's interested in calling is 10 and still a lot more interested in cranking it up than finesse. Don't know how many times I've had him try the Microhen only to have him run it briefly and pick up something else, but he's probably sick of me suggesting it.)
