The duck call journey

Postby Ricky Spanish » Sun Dec 04, 2022 6:19 am

For me it's been an epic saga that took decades.
Some progress much more quickly.
Yesterday it finally hit me in the head.
Gary had to re-tune my calls because I'd advanced past the calls abilities.
The old wooden throwback calls I have weren't meant to run that way they're more of a finesse call.
The Illinois cut and throwback in acrylic were advanced calls you can play much harder.
I'm past using the hedge calls but if I need that it's there I just have to blow them j-frame style.
My other calls blow like cutdowns now.

I bet if I hadn't sold my daisy cutter that suddenly I can blow it right. It took me a full year to develop the throat muscles and figure out I can control air speed too.

What's sick is how...when the Tennessee champion guy suggested cook cook I completely rejected his advice which was exactly where I needed to head next. He'd picked up on "where I was in the journey" and put up a sign. I kicked it down. He got angry...yeah that happened in public.
It's a heck of a journey to get to where you outgrow your calls.
Can wail on the Illinois cut it's one heck of a call. I had to grow into it.
I've got two. The brown one is tuned heavy. It blows like a cutdown and i cant overdo it.

Put the heavy reed into the cutdown.
Oh man that call is like a Mondo now.
Tape your insert in. It holds air better, looks cool, and you won't lose the priceless not replaceable insert.
Using the olt to get flocks of mallards to land is powerful.
It's gonna be sick after Christmas.
"I'm Gonna kill more birds than avian influenza".

That brown one looks so good, I’d run it on Sunday mornings.

That's the goto call.
It sounds a lot like a mondo now.
I'd sort of put those aside thinking they were weak throwbacks. Boy was I wrong.
It never occurred to me that a guy might progress and re-tune calls to be stiffer and stiffer.
Got to where I had to hold back and Gary figured it out very fast and adjusted.

Echo will work with you like that.
They literally build YOU a call and tune it to you. You have to go to Beebe, Arkansas tho.
Gary did that for me yesterday on my own calls.
It's pretty cool.
I had no idea. It only cost 2 gallons of honey. Sweet deal.
