The call game

Postby Ricky Spanish » Mon Apr 03, 2023 5:58 am

PC asked for it.
Want to play pick out the wood one or something like that.
I doubt you can tell acrylic from wood so let's start there.
4 calls...two are wooden. Figure out which.

1,2,3,4...which are the wooden calls?

THE WOODEN ONES ARE THROWBACKS AND THE TWO ACRYLIC ARE ILLINOIS CUTS.

I don't have a collection of throwbacks in all the different woods. I had an ebony one in my hands for a while.
Wasn't that impressed. Hedge is what works for me.
The black call sounded flat compared to hedge. Hedge sings.

It'd be interesting to play this game with a lares mag hen and try and ID it with the reed upside down.

Fuck.
Youtube showed I'd double-uploaded the video so I deleted the extra one.
It deleted both. Weird. Youtube double publishes stuff a lot. Dumbass smartphone is why.
I'll try again.
Sorry.

Try to supply some content that is not you bitching.
You can't tell an acrylic call from wood.

It should be easy.
It is.
Now just pick out the wooden ones.

Here is a shovel your size.
Keep digging.

"Upside-down" how? Noticed on a different thread post that it seemed to reference toneboard orientation, rather than whether the reed's spine is away from, instead of against the the toneboard. (Which shouldn't make a lick of tone difference in a well made call. Though running a call with the reed and toneboard horizontal, up or down, might well increase the likelihood of the reed sticking in accumulated spit.)

You know a reed has curvature and which way it goes.
My mvp , if you take it apart...
The cork made a nice dent so if you flip it it'd be obviously wrong.
Test the reed and the curve goes down.
You seriously think it doesn't matter?
I think you know better because you're tuning your own calls. I used to do it but got lazy and can just have Gary come to dinner and tune them.
He's fast at it and can just hit the bullseye in one try.

how about you post without making an ass outta yourself, impossible, isn't it? :)
Put some volume into it or the vid is worthless! That's where the difference becomes clearer

How about just actually reading my post, which tells you I do think both "upside-down" possibilities might be meaningful and why.

The answer to your question is that the very first series of notes you blew sounded crisper and more likely from acrylic than the one right after it. Once you started numbering them, your notes were too incredibly flat to pay attention to, much less be meaningful for comparison. Happy?

So basically the call experts can't tell acrylic from wood but are expert enough to crybaby about poor calling in a ten by ten room. Not loud enough.
These same fellas will complain how its too loud out in the woods with water underfoot. They'll pull out their two reeds beginner call and insist it's better.
I know because I've been there.

1234.
Keep it simple.
Your answer feels like " you played so bad that nobody can tell".
1 is ____
2 is _____
Scared to try?
Wow. It's a hard game. Imagine if we tried to do wood.

Anotherone can tell the difference.
Even picked out the best call.
How? Has super hearing or something.

Were you only half-baked, you might have read that I thought "the very first series of notes you blew sounded crisper and more likely from acrylic than the one right after it." In my experience, crisp has the edge, so whatever call that was would be "best". The rest was mush.

Giving it another go when you're straight might produce more meaningful result...

I admit I couldn’t tell the plastic from wood. I was too busy sneaking up on that #4 suzie for a water swat.

Too many words for my simple mind to sort thru.
Was looking for #s and letters I guess.
It's not hard.
1 and 3 are Illinois cut acrylic.
2 and 4 are hedge throwbacks.
Pretty much the same calls.
1234 left to right.
The 5th is a throwback acrylic.
Hard to see much difference in the cuts.
5 is hard to hide it'd be too easy a game if I used it.
Five tone boards walked into a bar...

They all look alike and sound pretty much the same.
Quack...
They make quacks.
I tried even more obnoxious acrylics and in a room with 4 walls. They sound alike.
The point is "if you go out in the flooded timber you might not be able to tell a mallard hen from a call and for sure you're not going to say " that's an acrylic duck call".
I doubt a duck can tell either but they can tell decoys from live ducks.

We overthink the hell out of this shit because of articles in magazines we read. Those articles are sponsored content and are biased.

What actually happens is you get out a call, blow it just to make sure it works, and ducks land right in the decoys as you go "fuck it's still not time to shoot yet".
Later after lst they're not interested a bit.

I know, outlaws have all the fun then make up a cool story. One day it’ll all be over and the poor bastards still alive can sit around a corn pile and shoot pigeons.

One of the funnest times I've had was a dove hunt where the host basically ran the garden hose in a hole he dug in his yard by hand in a low spot.
We shot about 60 and quit.
Killed a few beers too.

Buy it, blow it, post it up, and some guy will write a 400-word flowery report on how bad it is.
