We used to run em as kids. Loved to hear the dogs. Most of the time the rabbits would run a fairly small circle but one place was different. After kicked up the rabbits would make a real small circle well ahead of the dogs and usually would not get seen by a gunner and the the rabbit would take off straight north until the dogs were out of hearing distance. Eventually they would come back by and hopefully get shot. If not they would run out of earshot again. I mean you had time to eat a sandwhich and drink a soda before they got back. Lots of good memories bunny hunting. Our rabbit population has dwindled and very few still run them with dogs.

Back in my dads day when the loggers took the first 30 feet and left the rest there were rabbits everywhere. By the time I came around rabbits were nearly nonexistent. I've been dropping trees and making brush piles for the past few years and they are coming around again. Got 5 so far this year.

You're nuts. Hunting rabbits without dogs is a suckers bet. Don't get me wrong, if I'm bored, or walking to do something else, like checking fences/ditchbanks, I'll take my .410, but to go out and actually TRY to hunt rabbits without dogs-- no thanks.

I would imagine in 5 or 10 years I will probably feel that same way. But for now I enjoy the challenge. Ill take my setter everyonece and a while an just send her in all the thick spots and hunt the rabbits more like upland but if there is snow i usually just track.
