Alliant 7/8 oz Recipe

Alliant 7/8 oz Recipe

Postby johnsinger » Fri Feb 22, 2013 7:51 am

I just found this forum. Hello jehler and Ned. It has been a while since I have spoken to both of you.

My question:
Does anybody know why Alliant dropped the 7/8 oz recipe from their website?

The recipe that I am referring to used 2 3/4" Fed Gold Medal hull, Fed 209A primer, 45 grains Steel Powder, NTC/Multimetal wad, and 7/8 oz of steel shot.

I have used this load as my goato load with size B steel for giant Canadas for the past several years.

Not sure why, has been a very effective load for me. I use 3 or 4 shot for ducks.

:welcome: always look forward to seeing more reloading guys post up here. Can't add any insight to your question though. New to the game and have dabbled in the 1 and 1 1/8 oz Fed GM loads.

That load patterns very well for me with large shot. How does that load pattern for you with #4 steel? I have really struggled developing a duck load with #4 steel. I have not been very impressed with the performance of #4 steel on ducks. I use it on upland birds and it works o.k. but I do not like it much for ducks. I really feel that wind plays havoc with small steel shot sizes.

I get great patterns with this load, responds well to whichever choke I have in. This is the only load I use with #4, will kill great out to 40 yards. Wind is definitely its downfall, most of the time I shoot a 1oz #3, but this load has its uses where it is very effective.

i do know one thing i would not stop shooting that load just cause they pulled it off there data on net. I have not seen there load book yet for 2013 . it was still in there 2012 book.

its just like the rifle powder co's,there are alot of loads that i use from reloading book print date of june 1973. I still check and see were they say is new max then i look in my old book and see what max in old load book and then work my way back up to just about right on for slight sticky bolt lift and it is right close to max load back in 1973 hornady load book. I would say good guess is that they found something that went wrong with that load and they pulled it. But maybe not quick phone call to alliant powder co would or should say should give ya answer to why they pulled that load.

I do know that the wad would not fit in the hull with that recipe without trimming it by about 1/8th inch. Now that I think about it, that may be why it was dropped.

Could be, it is a good amount that needs to be trimmed. With it beibg a low pressure load, couldn't see that being a problem.

That could be problem that poped up,to many people calling in and saying the load does not work instead of just cutting wad down. I know that in still going to be loading that up that recipe that is for sure!!!

I have had more one shot kills on geese with this load than any other that I have tried. In about 3 seasons of using this load, I have had only one goose that was capable of moving after being hit by it.
