So what's everyone loading this year

So what's everyone loading this year

Postby dog walker » Thu Feb 28, 2013 12:53 pm

With this season now officially over for me it's back to the patterning board. This season I noted what worked and what didn't for me and my friends. I did a lot of patterning with my guns and my buddies to see what worked best in our guns but the field results are what's its really all about.

For teal season I loaded up some lightning steel 2,recipe 5. I loaded them in both 4 and 5's. What I found was although both were effective the 5's were often found in the meat and not passing through even these little birds. So 5's are now off the list and 4 is the smallest I'll load.

This year I really liked rsi 75 with 3's for my all around general load. I loaded up 2 cases in 1's for my buddy to use on snows and he loved them on birds over the decoys and anything inside 45 yards after that the amount of clean kills dropped off. I loaded a case of BB's for my uncle to use on snows and he had no issues taking birds beyond the 40 yard mark with a mod choke.

When I was hunting open water, late season, high wind birds I used a cheddite, lbc 1 1/4 oz load of 1's. I also used that load with 1's and B's on snows and it was just as effective. This load really hammered birds and will be another that will be in the lineup.

I really liked rsi 74 loaded with BB for long range snows. I'm going to look at what other 547 grain BB loads I can make up that will hold together this summer. I want to look into csd and lbc loads. I loaded a BPI recipe for lbc,fed paper base,547 gr load in a 3" black cloud hull, which has a little more volume than the regular fed paper base hull. They ran an average of 1420 fps but patterned right at 90% at 40 yards. That's a good pattern I was just hoping for a little more speed but that load should be fine for snows laoded with BB. I didn't field test that one this year but I will next spring.

Just made the dive halfway through season and didn't get to play around much. I did however love shooting a 2 3/4" 1/8oz recipe given to me by Cannon. Wrecked havoc on birds inside 40. Want to play with new wads that I haven't been able to play with.

I do want to find a lead load that cycles well through my A5 mag. Jarbo, what's your plan there?

I try not to make plans, they will change a week into the season!:lol:
I would like to get me a bunch of VP60 wads, hope their replacements are any good. Ended the year with a 1oz #3 load I really enjoyed. Will prob load RSI 132 for geese with BB and #1, 1 1/8oz liad with 3" Ched hull.
What kind of lead load you looking for flight?

Do you trim your sam 1's in 132? I had issues with the wad getting in the crimp. I had to get to 90 pounds on the wad pressure and that seemed to help. I was thinking about loading a couple with the 2 3/4 wad and checking it for set back after I fired it.

One that cycles good in the mag for dove and clays. Figure if I throw 1 1/8 through it it can't not cycle. Heard if you lube up the mag tube it helps a lot with the lighter loads

A little overkill, but the 1 1/8oz Longshot loads will cycle, slowest is 1420fps.

Dogwalker, all my crimps have came iut good without trimming the wad. In case I have the #s mixed up, this is the 1 1/8oz at 1635 in 3" Ched hull.

I presently load the following, all 2 3/4" 12 gauge:

Goose: 7/8 oz B steel Alliant load with Multimetal Wad
Duck: 1 oz #2 steel one of the Lightning Steel loads in Cheddite hull
Pheasant (non tox): 7/8 oz #3 or #4 steel one of the lower pressure Lightning Steel loads
Pheasant (lead): 1 3/16 oz #5 and #4 lead with a Windjammer wad at about 1275 fps

For the summer trap and skeet shooting, I am loading about 1000-1500 rounds of 12 gauge 1 oz #8 lead at about 1150 fps.

I recently purchased a 16 gauge gun and a 16 gauge Lee Load All II. When my components get here, I will be experimenting with 7/8 oz and 1 oz trap and skeet loads, 1 1/8 oz lead pheasant Loads, and 7/8 oz steel loads. Should be fun.

Yea Jarbo that's it. I noticed when I loaded some in light blue 3" cheddites that the top of the wad was getting folded down in the final crip. After firing them you could see the top of the petals where they were folded in. Now they aren't getting caught in the crimp just slightly folded over.

The same thing happened with kent hulls I just had to use a lot of wad pressure when seating the wad to prevent it.

I like a lot of wad pressure on loads with STEEL powder. I also seat and put a little pressure on the shot after it has been added.

PM your email address, have some good 16ga data, can tell ya which loads have worked best for me.
