My hunt today

Postby rozzo842 » Sat Nov 10, 2012 12:47 pm

It might not be a huge stringer full like I see here allot but I had a good time.
After all, I've only ever hunted 5 times so this bird has me on a high.

Thats what its all about. I've been hunting for 20 years and I still get hugely excited when the ducks cup their wings and head for my decoy spread. Good job.

Went out yesterday and wound up hunting with a couple guys who had a dog. Had a ton of blacks coming in just before first shoot and had our limit 10min after. Only had a pair of mallards and a group of buffleheads come in after that.
What a great time just watching the dog work, absolutely amazing.
With under a week left I'm going to try to get out as much as possible.

Watching a dog work is always fun times. Looks like a fun hunt!

Make sure you check those wings on the blacks- like you, I'm tired of my one bird limit. If it has any white at all on the speculum, it's a hybrid, and counts as an "other" duck, so you can shoot another black.

Thanks, great tip. I was on edge after my one, afraid to pull the trigger unless I was 100% it wasn't a black. Being my first season its not so cut and dry for me yet. This was actually the first black I have shot.

Congrats! I will say this- I've never actually been called on this by a warden. But it is a scientific fact that black s have NO white on the speculum at all. So if there's a hint of white, they've bred with something else, and legally and technically aren't blacks, but count as an "other" toward your limit. I'm always looking for a way to shoot another, because they are the tastiest ducks to eat, in my opinion.
