Motivation for Boot and his FIL.

Postby QH's Paw » Tue Jun 04, 2013 8:57 pm

Few years back but, .......

Me and the boys hit the beach for gators.
Wouldn't you know, they all got keepers.

Image

I had to be contend with 3 oversize for the day. Here is one of the OS I caught that day on the beach.

Image

My son's BIL caught his first keeper about 2 1/2 miles from our place. It was just 1" below the upper end limit. He was pretty excited when we put the tape to it.

There are trailcam pictures but nothing on the ground. There are a few videos at one of the baits too. I'll try to put them up or see if quackhead will.
When I got there and saw the activity(or lack of) I decided I'd spend that $300 tag fee on something else.

Hey Boot, it's easy you'll get'em, even from the boat.
My daughter does, when she goes with us.

My daughter isn't picky, she'll hammer the hawg gators from the beach too.

In case you're wondering, yes she won the battle with the oversize gator.

Hey Boot, did you hear about the big fire yesterday. I don't know where you guys launch out of but, one of the main fish processors burned down over in Warrenton(across youngs bay from Astoria).

remember when wile e coyote drew up the diagram of a roadrunner with the different parts and what they eat like, sturgeon is very similar to roadrunner in its complexity

We'll be headed down to fish from the beach spot on Tuesday. It could possibly be the last time in my life I'm fishing for keepers. It goes to C&R only next year, for the whole state of Oregon.
If we get a keeper, I'll try to keep a chunk for the next trip over.

They only bone in the whole fish is the head(skull). There are barbs that run on the outside of their skin that are harder than bone.
I would say they are comparable to Halibut in flavor and texture. They make great battered fish and killer beer battered fish.

they say theres still some of em in Klamath Lake. I've never personally known anybody that's caught one but that's F&G's claim. I remember maybe 15 years ago an article in the newspaper about a big one making its way into the canal system. Going into smaller and smaller ditches til it got to a point where it couldn't turn around, ended up being found dead by a farmer. If I remember right it was like 8 or 10 foot.

There was a 22' sturgeon found in Lake Washington years ago.
I've caught bigger than 10' with that rod my daughter is using in the pictures above.

I'd like to try it from a boat some day. Breaking loose from the anchor and chasing them sounds like a blast.

I done it both ways and standing your ground on the beach with a 1 piece 13'9" 5F Lamiglas rod is the shit. Anyone can get it done hovering over them in a boat. :fishing:

I drove through warrenton when that sucker was burning down. I just assumed it was someone burning brush.
Nice sturgeon pictures. My dad smoked some for a couple hours, then canned it.
Turned out pretty good.

Tyler, have you fished sturgeon with your dad? There's a pretty good hole near where your grandpa has that property on 30. It's almost straight across from where you live now but, on the Oregon side.
I canned some sturgeon before but, I think it's better fresh.

We would fish for them off a beach in westport. At the mouth of a slough that the ferry goes through to pick up the cars on the oregon side.
I agree that fresh is best. Chunked, battered, and fried.
