In '94' the company I worked for sent me to Chaska for an equipment school. The people at the school told me Prince or, at that time, they were calling him "the artist formerly known as Prince", as we drove by some big fenced estate, that was where he lived. I don't recall his name ever coming up in a conversation my whole live, other than then.

Rent the town house out on a per year basis to cover your payment and save money while you stay for free. The drive sucks but you will get used to it. I had a 1.5 hour drive for 3 years and after a month or so it didnt bother me anymore. Getting out of downtown Norfolk was the only headache though.
The first thing I would ask though is if the girl was worth the move and changes.

Is'nt there renters insurance, ensuring everything is code, establishing rules, having reliable foremen of different trades on hand...I mean there is a lot of responsibility and learning curve to becoming a renter. All these issues become twice as hard remotely. I do not see how this is a feasible option.

Most renters that actually benefit play the numbers game. Lots of properties. You rent to one bad person and they cost you thousands and maybe everything with one fell swoop. You trying suing them and they fake their death and then you still can't collect on death insurance money Because they ran away with it under a new alias to0 fast. I can't fathom renting out my first new cherished private property and placing the responsibility of it in some dirty renters hands. That's a road map to the giggle-shits-insane-asylum ward down on 4th ave and tenth.

So why not continue to live in your place and let the girlfriend live in the "free" place and see how that goes for a while?

I like how many people came out in favor of Goldie getting a new woman.
“If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.” ― Samuel Adams
