Don is a good dude.

He does good works behind the scenes in real life.

Interesting when any one questions the value of TV how no one will even entertain the thought that maybe, just maybe, there is a grain of truth to
the reason they call it the idiot box.

And yes, I watch the mother fucker myself. I think Don is right though about having a moment in your life where you value your time on earth in a way you didn't before. And at that moment, TV doesn't have the same shiney alure it used to.

You ever wonder how much time you spend in forums?

I know you don't keep track of my habits, but you'll rarely see me post anywhere during hours my kids are awake, except times like now. I'm working. I rarely post in the evenings or on the weekends. After 9 when they're in bed, maybe, but never while I'm with them. I also, if you haven't noticed, went from a large part of forum communities to being a minimal poster. I've spent more time here than on DHC, save the state forum where I use it to promote myself and through me, my Delta chapter. That's a necessary evil in some aspects. I wish I could just send people a postcard and have them all show at events, but I need to keep myself out there. Without my exposure, the chapter would die. I handle the bulk of it myself and if I go away, so does everything else.

You're a better man than I. Whenever I get involved in an organization, it usually takes me about 6 months to just want to go to the meetings and fill the room with uppercuts. It always seems as if those who bitch the loudest about how something is working out are those that do the least. And then there are the attention whores who seem to think that they are blessing the organization with their very presence.

I suppose it really just comes down to the fact that I despise most people. I prefer alone and with the TV on to the company of others 99% of the time.

Jim, you have an idea, but may not know what it's like to chair a chapter. In that case, it all flows up hill. Everything that comes up that becomes an issue, people are quick to wash their hands and push it off to me. I ask for volunteers, i only get advice on how to do my job. As if that makes my workload easier. The i get people, who haven't done a THING, who want to step in and run critical programs, like our box building. What funds the boxes and hen houses? Banquets. Do they volunteer to work the banquet, sell tickets, contact sponsors? Do the leg work? You know the answer. People only want the glory jobs, the easy stuff. I have a few guys on the team, but not what i need. I pulled off a 1q00 man banquet, coordinated it, lined up ALL of the sponsor, all but 2 of the donors and sold 95% of the tickets to it personally. Then somebody wants to try and ride me about getting a box building program started in March when our banquet was in March? Had they attended a meeting, they'd have known that the funds aren't available in that fashion or that quickly.

If I would tell you what it's taking to get this wounded soldier hunt going, you'd wonder if I'd ever do it again. I will, but it's a ton of work.

Have been in several organizations. The quality ones were difficult to get into.
Amateur Radio Club was really good because the club requires that you get a general radio license within six months or you are dismissed.

Ducks Unlimited...my father was a bigshot in that and volunteered me a lot. I was the one who went to the artsy-fartsy people picking up their donation (items). Raffles and prizes. It was WORK.

Good luck on the wounded soldier hunt. Where you doing it at?

Holy hell this thread has turned as stupid as the concealed carry thread. I've been around as much death as you Don, much more if you wanna include work, but I still wake up at 6 every morning and without regret watch Dan Patrick with my cup(s) of coffee. With the exception of a couple fuck ups, I'm happy with the way my life is headed. My kids are all straight A students and I'm a shitty dad. On my death bed, I'll regret that I never took enough time off work in March to watch more of each year's NCAA tournament

FIFY

We have a TV in my house and my kids are allowed to watch it. We also have video games. It's a PS2 so we are majorly behind times...lol. Even tho we have them in our house, the kids are very closely monitored as to how much they watch TV or play video games. In fact the video games tend to collect dust they get played so little. I don't feel there's anything wrong with television, but for the most part it does NOTHING to stimulate a kids brain. I'm not judging anyone that's lets their kids watch TV or lets them play video games a lot, but for my kids limited participation in these activities has a positive impact on their everyday behavior.

And no I'm not Dr. Phil nor do I watch his show. Can't say I've ever watched it at all.

When you watch your buddy's 3 year old son die of cancer, when you get a call that your father, who you were fighting with and haven't spoken to in years, dies. Sometimes it's not so traumatic, but most guys do wake up one day and wonder what they could have done to have lead a different life in some regards. I'm not better, smarter or more educated than any of you. I'm just saying that you never know how long you or someone you love has on this planet. Make the most of it. I'm not telling anybody how to raise their kids, either. I'm just saying spend as much real quality time with them as you can. My kids are all very smart, high honor roll, straight A students who can pick out the grackle in the flock of starlings. I'm very proud of my children, but I'm not telling anybody that what I've done is solely responsibe for what my kids are. Them not watching TV is a small part of it all. We play Apples to Apples and monopoly a lot. We play cards when we can't go outside. There are so many more things that challenge and stimulate kid's minds, TV just seems like a waste.
