possession limit increased

Postby don taylor » Wed Jul 10, 2013 7:22 am

We're going up to 3X the daily over 2X.

With 7 people in my house, it was 84 ducks. Now it will be 126 ducks. I struggle to get to 84 ducks out here in the duck desert. 126 will be almost impossible. I guess I'm just going to have to suck it up and spend more time hunting this year.

People follow that rule? You are a few hours south of me in PA right? We get a ton of hunters from PA here in our early season.

I camp for weeks at a time. Keeping ducks quickly gets to be an issue if hunting is good.
This will help. My possession limit just went to 18. Nice!
12 mallards is plenty.

Is this via the Feds? I know they had also mentioned ending possession limits at your residence, as they are all but impossible to enforce. Would also really like to see what they are going to do to the Canada limits. Talked to our state's waterfowl biologist about a month ago and his impression was that he would be shocked if we didn't have at least a 5 bird limit.

Here there is a strict quota on the number of Canadians we get to kill. :P
If the limit were five...the season would end much sooner. (Here)

Don, I saw this proposal on the Feds' hit list this year. Did you notice if they got the other related item through or not? They had possession ends at domicile pending within the same federal rules restructure of definitions etc. That would mean possession limits don't apply at your home(or anyone's home).
I'm assuming your Flyway must have had it's meeting already. The Pac Flyway meeting isn't until July 23. We won't know our final framework until after that meeting.
Where did you get the above info?

8 a day here for a month then 3 a day for the rest of the season here. Your goose population must suck enough that they don't want people taking too many. I wish the feds would let the states mandate their own limits on them for the whole season and not just early season.

8 and 2 here. Just a couple years ago it was 15 and 2. Why they dropped it, I have no idea. By the last count they did (2011, I think), the resident population was estimated at 85,000. Considering they only want 30,000, and most of them are in residential/city areas with no hunting, dropping the limit just seems stupid.

Same here, posession is 3x daily limit, black duck limit went up 1 bird, so 4 blacks per day. Early goose used to be agricultural land only, now it's open everywhere. Season got extended 12 days for pudlers, but all that's left by that time are blacks. There is also talk of opening a spring conservation hunt for mergansers because "they're eating all the trout and salmon" when anybody who actually looks at what is going on can see that what is eating them are striped bass. Our waters are choked with them, and the bass season is 15 days long, 1 per day, 1 posession.

I suspect the reason is you're targeting the lesser rural resident population and migrating resident birds from other states. The nuisance birds in the suburbs, cities and parks aren't being killed. We have the same issue in our NW zone. Guys want to shoot 8 a day and 5 a day like the south zone, but the birds that get hammered are the migration SJBP birds from canada. The residents learn the blinds in short order and only the dumb migrators will play. SJB birds aren't in large supply and they want to preserve some of the subspecies.

Atlantic flyway met already, Maryland jumped first and all Atlantic states are assumed to be following suit. There is no reason to not.

You know nothing of Illinois waterfowling traditions like I know nothing about New York Amish.
Better check into the stuff you say. Betcha Illinois kills more honkers than New York.

Your stricter limits probably has to do with the hunter numbers. I'm guessing this figure, because i read it a year ago, but on my side of the state, there were less than 4,000 migratory licenses sold and less than 30,000 state wide. That's out of 750,000 hunters who get their license yearly. Most of the waterfowlers live in the eastern part of the state. We have a ton of residents and nobody to kill them. I'm guessing the same thing holds true in NY. They also set limits based on projected sales of licenses, I'm sure.
