Would that cause any of the oil issues? Although I really just think it was an old/bad gasket. The old ones chipped off of there like pieces of peanut brittle.

They say it will cause leaks if the valves are mis adjusted. It can cause the compression gases to blowback past the rings and cause to much crankcase pressure which will cause oil leaks. Blown gaskets or the crankcase vent hose are the things that would most likely leak in this scenario. Your mowers performance should be much better now.

Glad you recommended adjusting the valve clearances. Otherwise, I just would've done the gaskets, and hoped that worked. Granted, it may be blowing oil out of the crankcase, and I won't know until I run it tomorrow. But it didn't look like it from the inside.

Believe it or not, they recommend you adjust BS valves each year with other maintenance. If you go to look at a used mower and the reason for selling is slow crank, starter kicking back, etc. and it is a briggs motor. The odds are real good the valves haven't been adjusted and can fix that mower. Good way to turn bucks.

These were bad. I mean, BAD. I damn near didn't have enough feeler gauge blades to measure the gap at the beginning (ok, that was an exaggeration, but 040 is a damn sight different than 005.

That's a shitload of valve lash. It's worth .035 lift on the cam, big difference.

It starts like a champ, and runs like a mofo.

And still blows oil like a motherfucker out of somewhere. Just gotta get through about 3 more cuts.

All you can do is get the tin off, clean it up, start it and watch to see where it is coming from. The crank seal is real likely, valve covers are real likely, the sump pan gasket on the bottom is real likely. How about the oil drain, is it a plug or one of those black plastic pieces of crap? Oil filter gasket? You will just have to look and see. Wish I could help but I'm not in Maryland and sorry but I really don't want to be.

Why not? He could mow 6 yards at once, in a half hours time.
