Help with Duck ID

Postby Laguna Madre » Fri Oct 04, 2013 9:52 pm

I took these pics September 21st in La Joya, Texas about a mile from the Rio Grande River and am having trouble identifying these ducks. They were very skittish and that is the closest I could get to them. I originally thought mottled ducks but upon closer inspection I don't think so. A little early for migrators. What do y'all think.

This, front one definitely looks like a wigeon to me.

I think y'all are right about the widgeon but the back ducks seemed a little big for teal. But can't think what else they could be as its South Texas in September.

They're undocumented messican ducks. That always makes it harder to ID them, being undocumented that is. :geek:

I'm sticking with blue wing based on head shape but very well could be wrong
