I know someone who was looking to climb to Everest base camp and that was going to be over 20k. I can easily see a bid for the summit being six figures.

I've always heard 100k. I'd do it if I had 100 grand to blow.

Also, Everest and K2 are not even close to the most dangerous...

I get scared climbing up a 14 foot deer stand.... As far as I'm concerned anything above that is asking for death.

The 50k is just one of the costs. It is what you pay the sherpas to take you up, and, hopefully back down. If you watched that video, you may have noticed the chick said she didn't see her Sherpa after camp 2(if I remember right). So, basically, he gets a check , points her uphill and then who knows if he even made the climb. Then there is about 5-10k for specialty equipment etc. On top of that you have insurance too.
Anyway, 50k is too much by itself. I could hunt my ass off in a few countries for that kind of money.

Went to Denali. Its rugged territory where the nearest road is 90+ miles from the mountain. That road is remote in itself...many many miles to even get close to a hospital...can't even imagine Tibet and Everest but I was at the place where all expeditions to climb Mount McKinley start from. I wasn't too impressed as there was a group of climbers in peril at the time.
