I just did. I figured the line would be drawn at asking to touch it.

I just knew that would get you rolling. I do have a nice hood but there is nothing wrong with a 40 dollar pipeliner with a 2x4 standard lense.

I think I need the autodarkening thing, though. I tried with a regular one, and it was an effing disaster.

They are worth the money! You will never go back to the old one.

Yeah I really wish I had an auto darkening helmet, the other ones are a pain.

I with this, I hate normal ones. I either like the autodarkening onces or the kind you just hold in front of your face.

auto darkening are nice, but not necessary at all. once you get the hang of keeping your hands steady while you nod down, its the same thing. the only reason i have an auto lid is that work paid for it (solar powered so it never needs batteries ;) ). at home i still use a garage sale find, fiberglass bastard with the tiny lense.

on a side note, that welder will also work as a cutting torch, assa. they make electrodes that carbon cut (or something like that). i came into quite a few and would be interested to see if your frankenwelder would work OK with them. let me know....

I don't like messing around with the autos. Had a couple quit on me while I was working. The old school ones take some getting used to but work just fine once you get used to it.

I actually prefer the standard lids, but it's probably because that's what I'm used to. Even when wearing the auto darkening out of habit I nod my head to drop it, even though it's already down.
