It looks like the 4th is ruddy but, it is hard to say with the picture. Yep, I'll say scaup, Oldsquaw, scoter, and ruddy.

It is hard with the picture. The correct answer is squaw, great scaup, black scoter & surf scoter.

Yes. Except the bluebills. I do eat the scoters even though they may be poisonous.

I was convinced it was a trick question, since I only saw 3, so went with the "maybe that one's a small redhead hen". But I would like to dispute that scoter and surf scoter are different species, although I'm really not sure.

scoter was too general for full credit considering i had two species of scoter.

Apparently they are. Black and Common are same species, and Surf and Velvet are another. I concede defeat.

we have black/common scoter, surf scoter and white winged scoter here. velvet scoter is europes version of our white winged scoter but i think they're a little bit different.

I pulled that off Wiki. If the pictures are to be believed, I would have a bitch of time telling the difference between a velvet and a surf.

Being able to tell a skunkhead(surf), white wing and Black(common) apart, as drakes, is easy as pie. Telling the hens apart is where most people have a problem.
I've never heard the term "velvet" applied to any scoter.

I had never heard of them either. Just came up while searching for species differentiations. This one is (allegedly) a hen Velvet Scoter:

It was almost a trick question. I offered the wing on the surf to distinguish between white-winged scoter and left the wing hidden on the female scaup. Therefor if there was only four species you would have to infer the hen was a greater scaup considering the full wing bar on the drake scaup was offered in the pic.
