Paying it back!

Postby Laguna Madre » Thu Nov 22, 2012 12:18 pm

My hunting buddy Neil struck up a conversation with this 80 year old man at the feed store. He said he loves to duck hunt but his knees were too bad to set decoys and all of his friends weren't interested in hunting anymore. We invited him to hunt with us and it was a pleasure to share the blind with someone from the GREATEST GENERATION.

Awesome job. I'm only 24 but my knees kill me when it's time to pick up decoys. Can I come down??

Good deal! Sometimes I prefer to hunt with the old guys, their stories are usually better anyways.

He is a good guy and I'm taking him out again Saturday. Turns out he has a Gator Trax boat with a mudmotor which will get us into the slough. The slough is a legendary duck hunting marsh that only airboats and mudboats can get into. Its arguably some of the best hunting in the Central Flyway. If anyone is bored google earth Port Mansfield, Texas and look at the marsh South of Port Mansfield and North of the Arroyo Colorado. There are millions and I'm not exagerating millions of ducks that winter there. And the Nilgai antelope and wild hogs sometimes show up so its a good idea to bring a rifle along just in case.

We can car pool. I don't have a mud motor though. Anyone between MN and TX that has one that wants to tag along with OG and me?

I'd consider hosting a couple of people for a Texas coastal hunt. I've got buddies coming down from Austin through most of December and I'm going to the Texas/Arkansas border Jan 1st through the 9th for a flooded timber mallard hunt so it would have to be late January. I'd have to check my work schedule before I could commit but it sounds like a good idea. Late January hunts can be more challenging due to the ducks have been shot at but we always manage to get a limit of redheads and some pintails and the buffleheads are usually here in decent numbers late in the season.

A word of warning for you Northern hunters. It can get really cold here in January and it might even drop into the lower 50's. Got to go I'm heading out to chase some redfish. Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving.

@huntntech- I've heard Southern Illinois is a really good waterfowling destination. I have a bunch of relatives that live in Collinsville.

Not sure if that's sarcasm, but it will barely get above freezing here for the next week, and I plan on being out hunting so... Not a problem? Heck lows in the 50's and I'll have to bring my camo t-shirts
