Chamber of Commerce birds - or insult to injury?

Postby Rick » Mon Dec 07, 2015 12:02 pm

Was on the farm DComeaux hunts early this morning waiting on an excavator that didn't show and grabbed a few shots of big, brown, squeaky goose-looking birds with spots on their bellies dropping into his pond:

Think there may be two different little bunches shown in that series shot from the east blind's road, know there were a bunch in there, but had the dogs and didn't dare try to photograph them on the water for fear of running them off.

For those who don't know, our first split ended yesterday and was a miserably bad one for Dave and his crew. So, naturally, the specks dropped in on their spot in droves this morning to say "Y'all come back." Or rub salt in their wounds.

And so the guys in the east blind who browse this board don't feel left out, the specks were beating up the six or eight decoys left out across the road from where they park. (My pup also caught a crippled greenwing in their pond - and found a well ripened hen gray duck. Poo-yee-yi.)

They started to investigate that little triangle just over the west big ditch this weekend (Saturday) with a group or two landing. It was a crawfish pond for the first two years we were there and now it just holds sheet water. They seem to love that little corner as they've been in there every year. Maybe this is the beginning of the "settling in" of these wonderful birds, which usually starts, or had started earlier in years past. Once they get right it's like taking candy from a baby..... we'll, sort of. :D

Our slightly NE neighbor would do we'll to remove those decoys between hunts.

I guess I could offer them Ellies clean up services after a hunt.

There were birds on your west neighbor's far back pasture corner (and pretty much all over the area), but those pictured were dropping to join others in your north cut. Don't know what held the long-stick up, but hope the birds are far enough back that its activity doesn't put them out before they grow attached to it.

That makes me happy! and I hope they hang around. Opening morning with the speck decoys set back out may just bring on a show.

Shoulda been there today. Shot these from your drive:

And this from back by your blind of them putting back in after someone got them up:

Left them in place, as seen through the flood canal break, by cutting across north cut (and through DComeaux's pooping grounds) to my truck at the pump:

Specks were again piling into the piece to your east, as well.

Excavator apparently put them out of Dave's north cut, as I saw none coming or going from it - until I was back at the truck and saw scads of specks low and looking but none apparently wanting to be the first to land. Appears just a matter of time, however, because when I say "scads," I mean scads.

Know most of our leasees in that area have struggled and that the first week or so just had to suck after the teal were blown out, but nearly every time I've been out there the past couple weeks, this speck starved marsh hunter has had the envies something awful. Almost always seems to be low birds around. (And, of course, I'm fat headed enough to think I could have worked them all.)

Re: the east blind's water, pump's running (albeit still partially plugged), so I've raised the board some to let it flow a bit faster. Not but a couple inches above the south cut's present overflow setting, as is, and could be a race between getting a buffalo over there and the plug in the blind levee washing out completely. Wasn't made to be walked on.

Looked to have been walked on. Know I thought I had it high enough that water would go over other, harder parts of the levee. "Is how it is," in either event, I'm not inclined to rebuild it and think it will do long enough.

"Expect" to. Have one of our own on that end that was set up very poorly and is doing zip, so I believe Doug's going to let me fix it whether the guide hunting it likes it or not. Assuming I get to do that, and the tractor's willing, I'll get yours while I'm there.

I found the addition of a camo cover an interesting touch:

If outhouse experience is telling, the wasps won't mind the crapper.

What a great graphic. Took a couple hydraulic hoses to NAPA for duplication today, if that salves the wound any.
