Last Weekend

Took a different direction and headed South Saturday with my stepson Dustin, and one of his friends, for a daylight hunt in the salt marsh. Dustin had found a few Mallards in a hole in the marsh along our coast last week, and this was the day to give it a shot. Made the 1/4 mile walk to the hole and set up just in time for LST. Nothing spectacular, but we did kill a Gadwall and a Goldeneye (speedy little bastard). Wish we would've had a dog because we lost the only Mallard we knocked down, along with a couple of green wings in the grass, downright frustrating!

Up early Sunday morning and headed North to a little pothole Dustin and I found last year, for a final day hunt. We had high hopes of killing a few Mallards, something we rarely see here anymore. Made the short run, carried my sneak and gear in, and settled in under a small grove of cedar trees. Daylight came and went with only a few Woodies passing by, and we thought about possibly picking up and moving to another place, when we had our first customers come calling. A pair of Mallards pitched perfectly, and Dustin killing the drake, while I wrestled with overhead branches and watched as the hen disappeared over the trees :o A few minutes later we heard a boat approaching, stop along the bank, and get out. I had to walk out and let them know that we were in there hunting ducks, and thankfully, they left. Later in the morning, when retrieving a bird, Dustin found a pile of corn under an oak tree, with a trail camera on it.......ugh! Apparently, the other hunter was coming to check it, and made us realize why we had not seen more birds. While the corn wasn't in the water, it was close enough that when he walked to it, he was sure to flush whatever birds were in there........bummer! Decided it was not worth staying with the yellow stuff so near, so we picked up decoys and headed out with the Greenhead and 2 Mottle ducks. Not the best ending to our season, but it was Dustin's first greenhead of the year, and it was an armchair hunt. Nice way to end the season!

A pic of our setup under the cedars. It looks like we were in the open from the picture, but we had overhead branches that swallowed us up from above.
