Poison Ivy

Postby aunt betty » Tue May 23, 2017 10:39 am

Have to admit that I'm a city-slicker yankee sometimes and this is one of them.
My mother liked to bring back woody plants from the woods they own 100 miles south.
She imported quite a few dumbass invasives with her cute little flower things or whatever.

Poison Ivy was growing under a tree when I took over.
Was all proud of myself when I figured out how, what, and when to spray on the shit to kill it.
Then this spring I placed a deer stand and a bee trap on that tree.

Caught a swarm of bees in it. While taking the box down I discovered the vines and all the "leaves of three".
Fuck it's up in the tree too. Thought I'd conquered it.

I cut the vines with loppers and stripped em off the tree from ground to about six feet up.
Noticed how the vines sort of root to the tree.
Question is is that going to kill it or will the vines somehow suck their life from the tree?

I don't get poison Ivy but my wife does.

I cut/severed the vines about a foot up on a few trees I have in my yard and they die, wither, and fall to the ground. If more start climbing, just nip em in the bud. I've sort of wiped em out doing this.

"I don't get poison Ivy but my wife does."

Be careful AB, I used to think I didn't get it either :o There may be some truth in your statement, but not worth taking the chance. I've seen it and been around it all my life, and after many years, got a small spot of that stuff on my arm one fall, which ended up spreading by touch to my side, and then again on my leg. Didn't think I was ever gonna get rid of it! Not so sure the poison isn't something like a sea nettle (jellyfish), where you can pick them up with your hands, and drop them into your palm with no issue (thicker skin), but get it on the backside of your hand or any other softskin area of your body and wham!

I would say that as well but still respected it, until last year. The wife and I got it really bad after part of a tree fell and I got careless when cutting it up. What a miserable time. It left a little scaring on my arms.

That's where AB's being a Yankee is an advantage. He can go to about any wet ditch and pull some jewel weed, the juice of which (applied to, not drank) will dry it up in no time at all. Very common weed up there that I've never seen down here.

Have went thru this same conversation with my wife.
I know an allergy can suddenly get worse. So far I have no allergy to poison ivy.
She has it bad. If there's a leaf on a branch and it gets in the fire she will get poison ivy from the smoke.
Had to fight with her to take the proper cure. It took a while but she got miserable enough to try my boy scout remedy.

Fels Naptha soap. Comes in a bar and is for laundry. It has naptha in it. The naptha pulls the poison ivy oil out. Her skin got better right away. Sort of a miracle when compared to watching her struggle with the standard stuff a doctor tells you to do.
If you think you got exposed wash up with fels naptha soap and be certain that you won't get it. My grandparents doubted me until it cured the whole family one summer. Apparently everyone gets it but me.

Was exposed to poison ivy last weekend and I got nothin'.

It's a buck at farm and fleet. https://www.farmandfleet.com/products/7 ... n-bar.html

In a pinch using coleman fuel would work. It is naptha and would dry your skin right out.

Don't recall her trying that, but my ex- would get it from my clothes if I didn't do that laundry after being in the woods. Went to specialists, had shots and prescription Rx to no avail. Then we happened to mention that battle to an old hillbilly aunt who looked at us like we were stone stupid and said, "Well, put jewel weed on it, child." Poof. All gone.

Knew thorough washing after exposure to be the official preventative, but not about Fels Naptha.

I know what you're talking about (I think).
If I'm correct it's the cure for stinging nettles. (itch weed)
What's cool is the cure is pretty much always growing within ten feet of the nettles patch.

Not so sure about poison ivy.
Fels Naptha works almost instantly. It really is the way to go or I'd never have brought it up. My grandparents said it'd never work but humored me.

We keep a bar of it in the bathroom.
When I went to summer camp (boy scouts) one of the required items for every scout to take was a bar of that soap.

Am fucking bummed.
The guy (TIM C) who helped me get into bees and helped me get in deeeeep suddenly out of the blue told me that if you have more than ten hives you're a commercial beekeeper. I live in the city and it has one rule about bees. NO COMMERCIAL BEEKEEPING.
If you start counting I'm in deep. A city-ordered abatement would be extremely costly.

So I confront all the other beekeepers in the club with ten or more hives and asked them "did you know you're a commercial beekeeper?", They sort of laughed at me. Been stewing a while wondering just what in the heck to expect.
Part of me thinks Tim is full of shit. In fact the whole club is saying that I'm full of shit for parrotting what he said. So far nobody knows the source of my info.

Tim is like the club guru and these people all fall over themselves when he speaks. It should get quite interesting when I drop the bombshell and tell these people that their guru is the one spreading the bullshit.

When I got two hives I talked to the city and asked them about rules. Only one rule. Just one.
I asked them to define commercial beekeeping and they said I'd need to make an appointment with the city attorney?
To define a phrase?
My imagination kicked in.
I imagined playing twenty questions with a lawyer asking me "just what all are you doing and I'll tell you if it's commercial or not". Get me to spill my guts then pounce and never define what I asked for. Aw hell no.

I figure if they can not define what they are enforcing then they are not enforcing anything until it's a major issue.
Right now everyone is chanting "save the bees" so I'm probably somewhat safe.

According to Kelley Bees, a bee supplier, a commercial beekeeper has 300 or more bee hives.
According to Tim the state of Illinois says commercial is ten or more and the US federal govt is fifty or more.

For me to get to ten or less would require me giving away about $5000 worth of bee hives. FUCK THAT!
If I sell them...that's commercial. A catch-22.

Thanks for the Fels Naptha tip, AB.

I don't get poison ivy, knock wood, but it's been an itchy summer for me: first with a flaming rash of nutria itch and then with an unidentified allergen that came over the airboat's grass rake and apparently collected in the sweat on my t-shirt above my belt. The latter left its own belt of crazy itchy welts (though no blistering) about 3" wide above my waist. Drove me batty not to scratch it which, of course, things like pulling a shirt on or off did for me. Thought about your Fels suggestion, but didn't get near a place big enough to carry it until only the most stubborn part of that rash was left, which I finally gave it a go on. Dabbed the wet soap on it, rather than just washing with it, and it did, indeed, seem to have the same drying effect I've seen with jewel weed. Only caught the tail end of it, but certainly showed promise in that regard.

Have also only recently developed apparent allergy to something in my yard which leaves me itching for a day after having lawn clippings stick to my bare legs, regardless of showering with Coast soap shortly after mowing. Washed my legs with the Fels after yesterday's mowing and no itch.
