Who had..............

Slot cars 1/24th scale back in the 60's? I had a number of them as I was 12 in 1966 and played with them daily until the local tracks gradually started to disappear. Then Back in the late 80's they made a very brief return and were gone again as quickly as they had come back. I still have all my cars including the "Gar Vic" set with a chassis and 5 interchangeable bodies including the "sonic needle". If only I hadn't used them they would be worth a fortune now, but then again you can't put a price on how much fun I had with them back then.......

Might have had a couple of them cars but at the end of the run. Had to be the early 70's.
The ones I had you had to solder the frames together. They were kits and then the motors...oh man they raped you on the motor then you could spend even more on a decent controller.
Was more into HO which all pretty much ended with the g-plus. The term "rare-earth magnets" was a big seller back then.
Then I got into chasing girls.

Now if you're a fan of That 70's Show you may have noticed the character Eric wore a "Slot and Wing Hobbies" T-shirt in one episode. The guys at Slot and Wing have no idea how that happened. (I asked)
They still have a slot car track but it's most likely in storage. They tried bringing it back a few years ago.
Slot and Wing Hobbies is right across the street from my bee yard.

There are OMG about a dozen hobby companies here in Champaign. Great Planes, Hobbico, Tower Hobbies, and more. Can't name them all. Slot and Wing is called "Dumpster Hobbies" because that's pretty much what they are. They sell seconds at full price. Not exactly nice people. Join CCRCC (Champaign County Radio Control Club) and meet the artards in person.

We had half the cellar laid out with an HO track. I learned that bending the copper bars under the brushes to increase spring pressure made the cars go faster. I even built a drag strip 30 feet long, jumpered the ends of the tracks with wire and alligator clips. We would line them up and everyone hold the controller at full throttle and someone turn on the transformer. Good times!

Won the Illinois State Championship with this old thing back when I was in college. The "Team Associated" guys from Hobbico took it hard. It's a Losi gas conversion kit. Still runs but if I break one part it's done.
