adding pond/flooded area

Postby benbryant57 » Sun Feb 06, 2022 3:12 pm

hi guys just wanted some advice, I have a 4 acre corn field that I've shot plenty of geese out of that I want to add an area that holds water, in the area when it rains a lot of the fields around floods and gets a ton of ducks, unfortunately my field is the highest field, so it drains quick, I'm looking to dig a decent area out, and put pond liners down, and when it rains it should hold the water, I don't have access to a well, but the rain we get floods the other fields so if I can hold the water it should stay, this year im planting millet. any advice on holding the water besides the pond liners? or advice on doing it

Assume you’re dealing with sandy soil? I don’t have much experience with sand. Heavy clay around where I am.

You described basically that your plot is on higher ground than the surrounding area.
Call it farm on a hill to simplify.

You're proposing building a pond on a hill..
How are you going to fill it? Jack and Jill?
The little civil engineer in me has to know.
Sand loam clay it dont matter.
Where is the water going to come from?
Hire an engineer to tell you if it's even possible. He'll want a topographical map with elevations.
Got one yet?

Four acres?
Levee it up with two small levees. One will fail. Second is backup. There is equipment made for building a dual levee.
Once your levees are built start pumping from the well you don't have yet. You can flood four acres with an electric 2 inch well pump it will take a long time.
Run electrical service ...MO munny.
Flooding your field artificially won't be cheap.
If you do it right you flip a switch and water happens.
