First Coyote of the Season

I am getting a late start on my coyote hunting season. I typically try to get out before deer season but with coyotes not being worth much this year I figured I’d wait a little bit. Just got a little glimpse of this lady running in. Didn’t get the phone down fast enough and got busted.

Looks a lot like where I live. Flat as hell yet a coyote can literally disappear by using a slight dip in terrain.

In this area there are two kinds of Coyotes.
The actual coyote and coyodogs.
If you catch one that's bony and looks like it's starving that's a coyote. If it's German shepherd size and healthy looking that's a coyodog.
Your dogs look healthy and big.

They have plenty to eat. Never saw a coydog here.

Eastern coyotes are moving west. Eastern coyotes are bigger and have more wolf DNA in them.

I think they are moving further west than is suggested. There was an absolute beast of a male coyote where I work a few years ago. He was a solid 50 lbs and looked 80+ in his winter's finest coat. He had a typical sized female with him and dwarfed her. I measured his paw print in the snow when he moved on. It was 3.2 inches. My 80 lb Chessie had a 3.5" print. Beautiful beast and looked 100% coyote just much bigger and very pretty.

I caught a glimpse of him heading to the office and pulled over. He was at the edge of the woods between the gate to get into our site and my office. Our site is 1,700 acres, mostly undeveloped land surrounded by a 2,500 acre park. Lots of wildlife. He just glared at me with his wolf eyes. Honestly I wasn't getting out of my truck. It was just the start of mating season and he had a girlfriend slinking in the bushes behind him. He was only 30-40 yards from me. I saw him ine other time.

I count myself fortunate to live in a coyote rich part of the country, as I admire and enjoy watching them. Don't know what this fellow's genealogy was, but he was by far the largest coyote or coydog I've encountered:

Wasn't a big deal. When it got close enough that I figured I better released him with "OK" he chased it a very few feet, then came to me:

My guys have never been allowed to fight unless fought, and the only times he offered to break that rule came after he saw one chasing his aging "brother" Brittany, Kie. And even then he'd only run them off when Kie was afield with us and could be stopped with a shout or whistle, unless it was on before I saw the target.

Other than that, he and our coyotes sometimes seemed like family, too:
