Still hunting for small bore.
When my dad died I went into his garage.
The gun case was locked OPEN?
Inside were the guns I'd cut my teeth on along with a lot of ammo and a few calls.
These are precious.
Olt 66
Olt 77
Olt dr-115.
Glynn Scobey reelfoot call with metal reed.
I bought a Dave Jackson dr-115.
It's more ducky imo. It's the same call just newer.
1670073526509677104417767505962.jpg

The 66 and 77 were sold as a set along with a double lanyard. I still have that too. Those calls are antiques.

How many of you have even seen a stickered olt call like those? Compared to what we use they are weak as hell but sound right.

You asked for it.
When I first started buying calls this was what was available.
I bought many. My daughter uses them as Christmas tree ornaments.

Rural King in Rantoul sold decoys and some waterfowl items. This area is weak as hell its not Stuttgart or even close. Had to think hard. Back in the 70s and 80s we had a couple Sporting goods stores that actually were sporting goods stores and not t-shirt shops.
K's Merchandise was where I got my first Columbia gore tex wader jacket. We had one called Alexander's owned by the grain company. The farm stores were it unless I went to another part of IllinoiZ. Decoys and waders were not easy to find at all.

When I was a kid, we had Steinbergs in Baton Rouge. My parents bought me my Stevens 311 20 gauge from Howard brothers department store circa early 80’s. Good times.

My wingmaster along with another like it with 3" magnum
chamber was bought at K' S on thankagiving day in 1976.
I shot lots of ducks with mine.
Still have it but the nice wood on it is now plastic.
Had a stubborn dog that I'd clunk in the head if he tried getting ahead of me to chase rabbits. I broke a stock or two on old Blackie.
Poor dog. He'd run off if I let him and I'd find him wherever the nearest female dog was.

I'm going to eat ribs.
Trade honey for a couple new calls.
Trade stories and I'm hoping to get some basic info on super basic stuff like greeting call and stuff like that. I might be doing it already or not. Probably not.
Always room to improve on calling mallards.
Nobody is perfect at it even real ducks.
I pretty much always hunt late season mallards. No choice they don't get here until late season.
Too much grain laying around to get fat on.

There are reports online of bird flu die-offs in Arkansas and Texas. Other states too but I didn't make a list.
Louisiana is one. Ouch this sucks.
If you see snow geese drop dead out of the sky or they can't fly and walk in circles dragging their heads you're on the bird flu x.

Got my calls re-tuned to fit my new style and skill level.
Have advanced to using the stiff reed in my cutdown.
Took a year but I'm there. Development of the kook kook type of air presentation hurts and took me that long.
It sounds way better now.
We talked about calls and routines and it turns out I been doing the right stuff all along I can just do it better now.
My new super loud call will ring your ears.
Two reed cutdown is not a super loud call.
I'm ready for return to Arkansas.
I may have a guest. Cross my fingers.

The bigger a candle mold is the more that shrinkage affects it. Wax is weird in that it shrinks when it goes from liquid to solid form.
These candles fall out of the mold easily.
My 6 inch taper mold is smaller and the candles don't just pop out easy.
Was surprised to discover how easy the bigger candle is.
Takes 8 ounces per candle.

Futon I mean.

On to the next thing.

This switch panel is problematic.
Arkansas road dust and moisture gets to it.
It ices up and won't work at bad times.

Maybe this would work better for me.
I see them on other people's boats.

My 16 foot river jonboat is only 40 inches wide on the bottom. 48 is way better and 52 would be even better until.its stuck between two trees.
Think about that and 40 is perfect.
I get into some tight places to hide.
Had a 1448 mv and it was faster.
The river jon turns better.

Kayak? You pull it around or paddle it?
Do you wear seal skin clothes and go by Nanuck of the North at the bars? 8-)
You need to come and buy my pintail duck boat and build you a mud motah. It's 13.5 feet long and nearly fullfills the "two-foot-itis" issue. I'd do it but then I'd have to actually use the thing. It is a cool thing but you're basically sitting on the floor, dog jumps in, and you mop up a gallon of water with a sponge.
Not what I call fun. Tried it at Bayou deview.

I remember watching one of your AR flooded timber boat ride videos and thinking, “Mike’s got a set of basketballs cruising around in them thickets.” Lol.

Oh yeah that was the final day of season. I was number one in the race so got a head start and I wanted that hole.
I'd ran that run every day for a week so had it pretty easy.
My friends get lost on that trail. It has a couple offshoots.
One goes to another hole and the other leads you into a lot of cypress knees and you're screwed.
It's called the elk chute. Goes for over a mile.
In summer it dries up enough for trucks to go thru there.

Remember that gas tank strap.
I've been in denial a week about it but I hurt my shooting shoulder doing that. It aches.
Not severe pain it just aches constantly. Need better drugs
Wife read up on what to do and ...
It actually works but I ain't healed yet.
This is different but she studied up on therapy.
I'm one lucky guy.
She rubs the shouder to allign the muscle fibers then rub the lymph nodes. Odd but that sends signals to heal out or something. It actually helps. I couldn't sleep for a few days. Constant ache.
At first I thought it was from shooting so many ducks

This is weird. The city wastes loot running lights on soccer fields at night in 20 degree weather.
I don't get why.

Oh...they play matches at 3;15 am. Doesn't everyone?

This is about as dumb as the university rowing team taking over an entire two mile stretch of a public lake like they own it. It's funny. They have sweet motor boat with new engine for the coach to yell at the rowers from. It's comical watching them practice. Funny bunch they are.

Wader patching is something I work on all season.
I'm starting to worry about this patch so I've redid some of it. So far it is dry and I haven't gotten wet yet this year.
I think I'll order a third spare set.
They were $139 after Thanksgiving and just like that they're $200 again.
Next leak gets cured by fire.

That time my gun got stolen was a heck of a story not quite fit for public. I actually ended up at the thief house in the basement with all the guns.
Gangster shit.
Mine was not there of course but they tried selling me a very sweet Ithaca semi-auto.
It had been abused bad.
Was covered in camo duct tape ( Face slap)
I'll never forget that poor gun it was a keeper but...I was afraid to look under the tape.
The end. That's my shotgun horror story of the day.
I've got more but again. Not fit for public display.
Once I had a Belgium made Browning in my hands that was so hot it melted my gloves.
Someone tipped off police and the gun thieves were all rounded up one day.

Was remembering a hunt from last year that went bad.
Turned around and looked at this picture and it's pretty much the "bat cave" where we hunted.
I look for holes like this one.
Low trees.
20221205_051835.jpg

This is Simmons Field in my mind.
Very similar type of hunt.

I camp right by Simmons field and have never hunted it. Could walk there.
If it's good masses of ppl hunt there.
16702393836257847859271964683592.jpg

Can't wait to get back to Arkansas.

This year that field is just dry dirt mostly. By my camp it's nice like the picture with tall weeds they mowed strips in.
Jamie hunts there tho I leave him alone he's a federal game warden..

I think I'll just get the deal for one maybe two.
They're so damn good.
I like the tails best but like the rest too.
It's fun eating them.

Have had quite a few people mention how they want a 390 like I have. Not just one or two. It's not hard to find them you have to look and have the card ready.
I had an all black one with plastic wood.
It got stolen. My daughter told me to get nicer things to replace what's lost. Smart girl. That took the sting right off.
So I got an even nicer 390 by sheer luck.
I went to the local gun shop to arrange shipping one to them from another shop in south Dakota.
The old guy looked at me and said "why not buy one from me?" and pulled out a shelf queen.
Me: "Sure".
Done deal I've never regretted it.
Back when I started wanting a semi auto I hunted with a bunch of guys that used 390s. It all kind of came together. No way I'm selling that gun.
