Lost a goose and its killing me...

Postby Bowjoe » Thu Dec 20, 2012 4:24 pm

seen a few geese hanging around the river edge the other day so decided to place a few floaters near the shore before light and try my luck.. Well just after first light had a pair come in looking at the decoys close to the bank of the river now the river is so high from all the rain we had.. Now the geese are coming straight at me the cup there wings I pick the closest one shot I hit it and it soars with looked like 1 wing right into the middle of the river.. I threw my gun to the bank and ran into the river trying to get it and then I went above my waders and the water was going so fast I almost couldent walk in it.. Im so upset my stomach is hurting.. I hate losing a animal any animal but this really sucks.. I shouldent have hunted the river with it being so high I thought they would of fell just in front of me and it would of been a easy recovery but I dident expect it the bank so far left and hit the rapids like that.. I feel so awfull .. Im not gonna hunt the river anymore till the water goes down dont want this to happen again..

Been there and done that...I bought a final attack boat but a really light canoe works well too. Don't beat yourself up too much...a eagle will dine on your dime tonight.

It's never a good feeling, but it happens to the best of us.

Joe everyone has lost a bird, it happens. As long as you tried your best to find it, you did good.

Good scout by the way! Lots of waterfowlers have little understanding of the scouting concept as it applies to bag numbers.

If we ban 2 3/4 inch shells, there would be no more sailed geese. Who's with me?

Why do you NEED a 3.5" inch shell? Keep the 3.5" shells in the hands of the prostaffers and not in the hands of the civilians.

Joe, sorry to hear about the goose. Best advice, get a dog and it will rarely happen again, if you train it right.
Plus, if you get a pup now it will be perfect timing for you and the kids to train it up in time to use all next season. You won't believe the feeling you have watching a dog that you trained fetch and deliver a bird to hand.

It happens.

We had a couple days where it was rough enough that if they weren't dead in the decoys, it was a challenge to find them.

That is a pointless statement without pictures of the piles of geese you killed with 2 3/4 inch shells.
... or do I just want to stare at dead stuff every time I come on here?
