Potatoes

Postby assateague » Sun Jul 08, 2012 8:01 pm

Broke down and dug up a hill of potatoes to go with the ribs tonight. Usually I don't dig any up until much later, but we didn't have any store bought left. I was happy as a clam with the yield, though. Had enough to fry, with some leftover.

Damn. Our blooms were all gone, and plants started dying back, about 3 weeks ago.

Let me rephrase that.

They guys growing chip-stock for Frito-Lay are about ready to crank it up...the table-stock / fresh pack has a ways to go. We usually don't have new potatoes until late July...and then nothing of any size.

How long do potatoes keep after you pick them?

How long do onions keep after you pick them?

Are both potatoes and onions like garlic in that they keep for 6 or more months?

Potatoes are iffy. There are many wives tales about keeping them from sprouting eyes (put an apple in with them is one), but I've never found a way to do it. It's too damp here for potato cellars, but they do work. I just keep mine in the ground, and dig them as I need them. They won't sprout until the the ground warms back up, and mine are long gone by then.

The onions are just like garlic. I tie up a bunch, and let them air dry. They'll last a long time, but not as long as garlic. My onions this year are doing very poorly, though, because I got them in too late. Same with the garlic. Supposed to plant it before Christmas, for harvest around June 1st, and I forgot mine until April. I tried it anyway, but it didn't work. Not going to have nay this year.

Do onions need a lot of light to grow?

I tried planting onions in a shadier area of my yard and they didn't do well.

Not particularly, but they need to be put in VERY early. They don't tolerate the heat/dry very well.

I've found that red onions do better for me than any other variety. Which is fine, because I much prefer red onions.
