Awesome. You should do that with a gun after you knock down some deer first and then start on your grizz and black bears, sheep, goat, caribou mounts for your Den. I always want to live where the grizzlies/brown bears live. You know you are still in wild country then.

Very nice pics. I'm jelly.
this was a trip of a lifetime. The pics look good only because the scenery makes it so easy.

Guess I am a little late on this one. Pretty much all firewood has the same BTUs, pound for pound. Cherry is great if you get your wood later than you should. Dries out fast, especially for 24" blocks. I burn hard maple and cherry all season. I don't get hickory because it takes a LONG time to season...like 2 years at 16". Otherwise its great.

On to the pine and softwoods. I cut down a ton this year for a lady and cut, split, and burnt it all. It was mostly cedar with a couple cord of spruce and fir. I could get 6 hours out of the cedar and 8 hours from the pines. For some reason there is a myth about high creosote levels coming from softwoods that causes chimney fires...my chimney hasnt been brushed, ever. Gotta get a ripping fire going once a week or so to keep it clean.

I went to Alaska twice. Once in the summer of 1974 and again in the summer of 1978.
Stayed in the Fairbanks area and at that time they were cutting thru timber to make roads for development of new subdivisions etc.
There would be huge stacks of logs all over the place and they'd just push them to the side to cut the road.
Had a Ford F-250 4x4 and a really old deuce and a half 6x6.
Made quite a bit of cash cutting, splitting and hauling firewood.
It was not pine.
Birch.
I've heard that it's incredibly stupid to fuck around with a crazy man's head.

If you burn cedar once a week, with enough air going to it, it will definitely keep your chimney burned out clean. Cedar is probably the hottest burning, if it has enough air.
The wood with the most creosote here is alder. You can burn alder the same day you cut it but, it will need a hot fire after, to clean out the chimney. Alder is considered a hardwood, as far as I know.
