Get an 8 foot steel "digging bar". Hammer it 4 feet into the ground and then slip the mailbox pipe over it. Next car that hits it will still be there when you get home.

Actually, it still is your mailbox.

One of my parents friends had the same problem, their mailbox kept getting ran over or hit with a baseball bat. Last time it got hit, they dug up the post and made a new mailbox out of 1/4 inch steel. The mailbox is welded to a piece of pipe that is about 6 inch diameter with 1/4 inch walls. They sunk it in the ground in about 3 feet of concrete. They painted it up really nice too.

About 4 months after they put it in, they heard someone drive up and stop at their mailbox. The husband watched as a kid got out of the car and took a swing at their new mailbox with an aluminum bat. He managed to chip the paint, but couldn't hold on to the bat. He is still waiting to see if someone will try to run it over.

Growing up we had this problem on my street from some HS kids. I remember our neighbor took some truck coils and welded them together then put some kind of cover over it. I think a large diameter rubber hose. Then attached a mailbox filled with concrete, the spring action was supposed to hit the car as they drove by and hit the box. I'm not sure how well it worked out.

My first reaction was to make something that would kill the next idiot who ran it over. Careful investigation makes me think that someone backed over it as they were turning around. They also ran over my culvert and went in the ditch.

Second one in two years. Pisses me off that no one has the decency to take credit and apologize.

So the problem is if some douche hits my pole and is injured I am liable. Trust me I would like to make someone pay a price for it. Instead I have to look at the bigger picture and avoid court.

I am leaning towards an upside down L shaped pipe reaching out to the street. It would be mounted on a base of a larger diameter so that the box will move on a hinge action when the next idiot hits it or bats it. I will make a tough ass box and paint it hunter orange.

Fuckers. I bet it was Hntfsh or Copterdick. They were both jealous of Brandy anyway.

Make sure you set it deep so they cant just run over it again.

Don't do that. If you do, they'll "discover" it, and keep driving by all night hitting that bitch like a Johnny Bench Batter-Up, for those who remember that contraption.

Unfortunately, I think you're right about this. I had a neighbor growing up who was being targeted and had this same concern. They wound up building a brick mailbox sort of "house," and the fucking vandals just blew it up.

I like your hinge idea.

Could you design something so that it breaks off near the base fairly easily so that hopefully the box doesn't explode but yet have a sturdy enough base so that it destroys the bottom of their car as they drive over it?

That would work. Same principal as the brake away sign posts on roads. Decide how much you want sticking up and then weld two plates on the pieces of pipes and bolt them together.

I love claymores. Those are the one thing that I would like to have, over automatic weapons, grenades, anything. Claymores are bad ass.

We had same problem. Sorry but building the indestructible mail box will only kill the next drunk that runs it over and consider it might be you or someone you love.
They had to make an ordinance here to prevent all the fort knox mail boxes.
Keep it simple. Use a 5-gallon bucket, a 4x4 , some sacrete and a new mail box.
Move on and dont sweat the little stuff.
I've heard that it's incredibly stupid to fuck around with a crazy man's head.

If a drunk kills himself on my mailbox I won't lose any sleep because it could have just as easily been the telephone pole or oncoming traffic. At least if its the mailbox it won't be an innocent pedestrian going with him.
