You'd be surprised at how many DUI's they actually get with these checkpoints. I live outside a small city that quits selling alcohol at 12 and really has no bars except for a couple of hole in the wall types. Our neighboring city, where I worked, has 24/7 alcohol sales and many bars that shut down at 2 AM. Most of the checkpoints are set up near the main bridge over the river between these 2 cities to catch the ones leaving the bars. The departments will put a sign up down the street that reads DUI Checkpoint ahead. They then have officers hidden along the side streets after the sign but prior to the actual check point. These officers jobs are to stop ANY vehicle that turns down one of these side streets in attempt to avoid checkpoint. There are also officers manning the checkpoints checking the drivers that come through. I've never worked one of these, but I suspect the majority of the DUI's come from the ones that attempt to avoid the checkpoint.
The last I checked, someone had a Facebook page set up where people in this area could post and let everyone know where they were located.

And the DNR checkpoints they want to do in MN are nothing more than profiling and revenue generators. They only will stop someone towing a watercraft. Aka, profiling.

Theres a place near here called wise creek on the ocmulgee river, a lot of people swim there and drink, but its also where my friends and i end a kayak trip we like to take pretty frequently. of course we drink on the way down and always have one guy that only gets to drink a few, but there has been dnr checkpoints on the dirt road leaving there. the last time we went they stopped us and said they could smell alcohol, had we been drinking? my friend who was the driver said "i had three beers all day and these other two guys have had abt 12 a peice," then they asked to search the truck, to which he replied "not without a warrant" and then they told us to have a nice day and be safe. I had no idea DNR was allowed to setup a DUI checkpoint on a road. i can understand stopping boaters on the water, but this is the only place i have seen one on land.

DNR are peace officers, who specialize in wildlife enforcement basically, so they have every right that any city police officer/county sherriff/etc have to stop people. However if it was a flat out DUI checkpoint, that is a little odd to say the least.

After he got his stuff he starts telling us this story about how he got a ticket for not having his federal fishing number on his person. He had taken some out of town friends fishing and dropped them off at his dock. Then went to the ramp to pull the boat out of the water. The VMRC was at the dock and checked his boat. He had one rod left on the boat that had a plastic lure on it. He asked for his license and he said he didnt have to have one he is over 65. Then he asked for his federal number and he said it was in his truck. The VMRC officer walked away and after the man got his boat up he walked over with a ticket. Even though he had the number and had registered. He hadnt even seen the man fishing, but because he had a rod with a lure on it he wrote the ticket. What BS. Unfortunately the GW is related to my wife. Last week I saw him coming and crossed a sandbar. He didnt, and several hours later when the tide got up he stopepd by the house. Asked why I took off and lead him over that bar. I said one, you are the crab cop, you should know the water and your boat, and two....I brought up the above story and let him know how I felt about it. I dont think I'll be getting a card at Christmas.

good for you
being a waterman, i deal with them all the time. here, most of the fisheries officers are good people and treat you like a human. most of the game wardens, park rangers and federal wardens are dickheads.
