the last thing you put in your pack

Postby aunt betty » Mon Nov 04, 2013 12:39 pm

It probably would be...I dunno, the first thing you plan on getting out?
So what is the first thing you need in the morning on a duck hunt?
I KNOW what I need first, do you?
Well? ;)

Headlamp and gloves. The rest comes later after the cold wet boat ride.
It all better be there but having light to find it all in the dark is not optional.

X2 it has to be awfully dark for me not to be able to find my way to the blind or back home. We do keep a handheld spotlight in the boat to locate fishing nets in the dark, but other than that, its lights off. Depending on time of year, the last thing to go in my bag is either shells, coffee or mittens.

What if you're in flooded timber where the light doesn't penetrate real well?

The absolute quickest way to get turned around and lost in the dark is by using a flashlight or headlamp.

We frequent areas where we have to watch for logs in the river or shallow spots, so I need mine to keep the boat afloat.

Just my personal experience. I've never hunted flooded timber, so what works for me may not work for you. All my boating is done on open water, where a light just blinds you and your eyes need to reajust when you turn it off.

5 hours with coffee and (used to) chew will make you hit the frozen shithouse in a hurry.

The flashlight is to use to find the gloves, toilet paper and other stuff.
AT is right but I bet he owns at least one flashlight so he can find his flint, steel, ax, and torches.

I do have many lights. Just don't like using them, because of that little bubble of awareness that they create, to the exclusion of all else.

Nope. Usually just work one up after pulling the jet sled for a half mile. Add in a decent breakfast before the hunt and I might have to make a pit stop half way out.

Pffftt! I do the same, and haven't had an issue yet. You need to work on that!

I agree with this, but I walk through the woods on the way in a lot of the time. I don't use the light until I get to the woods, but I'm not interested in tripping over logs because I don't have a light on.

If at all possible, I use the moonlight when I go out. But that's not always there and I've been in the woods/marsh before where I couldn't see my hand in front of my face without a light.

My reply..."its the woods and you don't ask bears and squirells where they chit do ya?".

we usually have enough snow that you can see a few miles, but you might still trip over a log
