Woody,

There are claims in that video that are complete nonsense. While I don't know that everything in that video is nonsense, what I do know is.

For example, it would give a 100% increase in cancer.

For the Japanese bomb survivors. Their cancer risk went up something like 3%. That's it. It's damn near impossible to increase the cancer risk by a lot. First it is hard to expose a lot of people to a lot of radiation and second there is an upper bound on that risk which is the point where the radiation simply kills the person. The cancer risk for the Japanese that received so much radiation that they died from it dropped to zero.

To produce the amount of radiation exposure that results from a nuclear bomb blast by the dispersal of radioactive materials is damn near impossible. If they somehow managed to get enough to do real harm, it will kill the people handling it. That much material is what we refer to as "self protecting" meaning that it will kill you if you try to haul it away without using the massive shielded containers designed to do that. Those thing weigh tons. And even then, we have blown up entire nuclear power plants (i.e., Chernobyl) and the risk is no where close to that. For Fukushima, because appropriate measures were taken, the risk is probably near zero. For Chernobyl, they lied about it and took no action to protect the public, so quite a few people died. Those are the mother of all dirty bombs and the risk is just not that high. They scare the fuck out of people but they don't kill that many. If you evacuate and go to Colorado, you will probably end up getting more and not less radiation exposure. No sign that living in those naturally high radiation areas does any harm and there is good reason to believe that the risk really maybe zero at the levels we would be talking about.

Hmm that's interesting stuff. I figured it was worse than that. Jeremy Wade caught a catfish at Chernobyl that contained 20x the radiation it would naturally have. It was in the cooling ponds for the reactors.

Olly hasn't posted this am. He must have been kidnapped by Isis and they hacked WWF.

I believe we be fucked.

I don't know what catfish in that area normally have. My guess is that it is pretty low. 20x a very small number is still a very small number.

http://ecolo.org/documents/documents_in_english/ramsar-natural-radioactivity/ramsar.html

In Guarapari, Brazil, a city of 80 000 inhabitants built on the seaside, peak measurements made by EFN on the thorium-rich beach were as high as 40 microSv/hour (about 200 times higher than the average natural background radiation in other areas of the world).

Inhabitants who live in some houses in this area receive annual doses as high as 132 mSv from external terrestrial sources. The radioactivity of the high background radiation areas (HBRAs) of Ramsar is due to Ra-226 and its decay products, which have been brought to the surface by the waters of hot springs.
The legal limit for radiation workers in the U.S. is 5 mSv/yr, I think the public is something like 0.1 (can't remember for sure). You will be forced to evacuate in an accident at something like 0.1 mSv/yr of additional exposure.

Yes.

If we use windmills to make power instead of nuclear power plants, far more people will die.

While you can debate the method and all kinds of technical stuff. This data seems pretty reasonable for comparing different energy sources.

Windmills are a terrible fucking idea. They kill shit tons of wildlife and the hippies could care less.
