Two of three uncles ( mom's side) on the left. Father in law of my uncle second from the left and my grandfather drinking a glass of homemade wine. Brought the great traditions of hunting and making wins from the old country. This photo had to be from the late 40's or early 50's.

Close. Or at least the behavior of the current inhabitants is close. It's a neighborhood in pittsburgh I wouldn't go without a gun now. Back then, it was full of northern Italians.

I keep these in my gun cabinet. The colonel's dog tags.
Quiz:
Why are there two?
What are the notches for?

One for the teeth, one to travel with. The notch is to keep it from slipping when you kick.

Having two tags intact also has a meaning. It means the person who wore them survived their service. If you only have one or none...is not a good thing.

I thought you meant the idea of two tags being issued, so to speak. Not the significance of two tags in your picture. Bon jour.

If you had dead bodies, the tag on the short chain was placed in the teeth and wedged into place however necessary to remain with the body for ID later. The other was taken. If you remember that scene in Saving Private Ryan when they were going through the dog tags, those were the ones taken from the bodies, leaving the other one there for ID on the body. In Vietnam, they started wearing one laced up in the laces on each boot, the logic being that it's easier for your head to get blown off and lose both, leaving you unidentified for your family than it is to lose both feet. This way, if you only could find a foot, you could still make an ID.

10-4. I thought the small one was taken and the other was left around the neck...

This is my great gramps shortly after returning from the pacific theater in World War Two. I'm told he was a landing craft driver and survived Iwo Jima but he refused to talk about the war so that's all I really know. He retired as a Marysville police detective in the 70's and worked for a funeral home until his death in 1987. My mom said he often picked her up from school in the coroner van with a recently departed in the back.
