Used to see that a lot with "light" (lead poisoned) birds, but it's likely a symptom of other illnesses, as well.

I don't know but I've been finding more "gangrene sucks".
If you hang one oh God no.
I'll clean it today I usually wait a day then pluck.
In Arkansas I pluck them in the field.
I suspect that drake ain't worth plucking but I gotta see.

At the club I use at DD they hang ducks for weeks until the heads fall off. I tried it and can't convince myself it's "the way".
Usually a duck I hang turns inedible pretty fast.
Not cold enough.
The DD bunch will have ducks hanging all week in 75 degrees. I can't accept that that's right.

The magic brass duck call sticks too.

This looked ugly at first. I thought hard about taking him to the vet but then I thought...
If you scrape your knee do you go to the ER?

Needs a dallas cowboy helmet.
His wounds closed up overnight.
20221110_043835.jpg

I'd never hesitate to use triple antibiotic ointment it works I've had to sew up a gash in a retriever myself before. I've dug pellets out of a dog's hide too.

The worst injury I've ever heard of was a dog getting run over by the boat and losing a leg.
Living thru that scar'd a guy petty bad.

Milo was never a tough dog.
Bred to be a pet.
Millet comes from hunting dogs.
Completely different animals.
Milo is Mellow Yellow and I'm gonna miss him.
My first retriever Blackie was very tough and a born hunter. We had much adventure.

I scouted hard for miles yesterday. Fishermen were angry about it I heard it at the dock.
They caught me pushing a raft of coots and thought "he's just riding around chasing ducks".
Was looking for mallards.
Found none.
Take it back I jumped one mallard duck after hunting.
It's that bad
It's bleak so I'll wait for the front on Friday

Once upon a time a guy started picking away at who was flaring what.
It got heated until I told him to take the dumb hat off.
He thought he was wearing Camo.
Kramer...

Later he shot a snow goose decoy three times.
Us: " you gonna eat it now?".
Him: " got tired of looking at it".

Now this I could use help. Some of you guys are so connected to weather. I don't trust them weather reports.
Need to focus on a certain particular watershed that is actually a vast system.
The groundwork:
The wma is fed by what we call the pipes.
5 really big ditches that network thru semo gather up water and it ends up at the wma.
It's quite complicated which ditch does what but several wmas depend on the water that ain't there yet.
So let me know when it rains 3-6 inches in semo/ neark.
It takes 3 days but an event like that will fill up the woods with water. It happens that quick. I wish it'd rain now.
Not dancing yet tho. It will happen.

That dark green line is the pipes.

East of Kennett, Missouri...

One of those ditches fills up the wma I use.
If I were smart I'd look up gauges. The one at 7mile is dry as a bone today.

Yesterday I was the only duck hunter unless someone used Parnell. I give up on that early it is over-pressured.
Once it gets icy however... that section you go out one icy night and it's solid mallards for a mile.
They come thru and it's over just like that.
You have to see it to believe it.
Come on snow n ice.

I don't know much about him.
Illinois State Champion Duck caller.
I never heard him use them calls. He told really good stories about using his calls tho. Amazing guy according to himself.
I guided there and him and his father are possibly the most full of shit hunting guides I've ever met.
It was ...different to say the least.
Another stain on waterfowling.
Around Canton there are many fields that were used to dump raw sewage from chicago. That lease is between several of the shit fields. Waterfowl goes and eats where it's not fit to eat. Did you know that? :o

The facts concerning them geese contradict popular belief so sure I'll go along with that poop theory.

Hey uncle Jed how about you telling us about duck calls with reed reeds and how your daddy dried them with a dollar bill?
In Late October my dad would send me to the music shop and buy clarinet reeds for his duck calls.? Odd
I've never heard anyone say they've used a call with not plastic reeds.

8-ball said " my answer is no".
So? It's a dumb kid toy.
You know when there ain't no ducks it don't matter a bit how good you or your calling is.
:o

How to tell if there are new ducks.
That's pretty easy just drive the interstate to rantoul or paxton and scope every borrow pit. If every pond has ducks it's on.
If not ...sigh. Maybe that's oversimplification but I don't have access to every HOA pond. There are many of those too. Just drive around and look for ducks.
It's a duck desert except for the University feed lots. Holy hell that place holds birds. Fresh hot meals served daily. What more could a duck want?

Wednesday I got a good look up close at a lot of deer.
They crossed thru and got drinks and were there a while.
They looked puny. No big bucks just a bunch of does and yearlings. There are a lot of deer and if I were into archery I'd set up off shore and peg the ones that wander the shoreline. I doubt anyone uses such oddball tactics.
Might work. I'm just not that into it.
I see deer a lot while duck hunting they seem to not even notice me or the dog in the blind.
It's tempting but not a good idea.

Reminds me on that Duckmen video where Phil flips that deer with his second rifle shot from the duck blind. I enjoyed the old videos, they seemed more concerned about killing ducks instead of selling shit to us.

Last post got me thinking on all the gimmicky gadgetry I've seen.
The first motorized decoy I saw was at a southern Illinois goose club way back in like 1978.
They had a stuffer that flapped its wings. (Honker decoy)
Very crude. Ran on wiper motors.
Later in around 96 I saw two guys that had duck spinners they'd made.
One was wind driven. The guy made and sold motion art for yards and he got the idea of a spinning wing decoy.
Their other decoy was a lot like a MOJO but was hone made. MAN them dudes limited out fast.
Banner Marsh walk ins.
Cool.place. the drawing is in an elevated mobile home that's way up high because it's next to the Illinois River.
Lots of gadgets. Can't name em all but the one with pulleys and a motor where decoys swam a pattern was interesting until you consider a big lab charging thru after a downed bird. What could go wrong?
Another home made gadget was a short tripod with a wipermotor that had an arm it spun.
Auto-jerk. Flip switch and your jerk rig started moving.
Not my idea but it's brilliant.
I made my own ice eater but its so weak...
Trolling motor inside a pipe. It does work but the motor needs to be more powerful.
Any other brilliant ideas that failed?
I've had lots of them.
Half-baked half-wit ideas. Occasionally one works.

I remember seeing and old bicycle converted into a decoy jerk system once on an episode of Higdon Outdoors. It was in a state that didn’t allow motorized decoys. Someone had to turn the pedals instead of shooting, that sucked.
